The Best Compact Office Chairs for Small Spaces (2026)

In a small room, the chair often takes up more floor than the desk. A typical five-star office chair base is around 27 to 28 inches across, and the chair needs room behind it to roll back. Then there are the armrests: if they sit higher than the underside of your desk, the chair can't slide under it at the end of the day, and it stays parked in the walkway.
We compared six chairs on the numbers that decide whether a chair fits a tight space: the overall footprint (or base diameter), seat width and depth, whether the arms are fixed, removable or absent, and how low the seat and arms go. We didn't test these chairs hands-on. Every figure comes from the maker's own product page, linked below each pick.
TL;DR: Our top picks
- Best overall compact chair: IKEA FLINTAN Office Chair ($99.99). Armless, 28" x 28" overall, BIFMA-tested and rated for 276 lb, for $99.99.
- Smallest base: VIVO Cross Legged Chair with Wheels ($119.99). A 23.5" wheel base, the narrowest here, with an armless swivel seat.
- Best for tucking under a desk: IKEA LÅNGFJÄLL Conference Chair ($249.99). Armless, low-backed (36 1/4" tall) and only 26 3/4" across.
- Most adjustable: Branch Ergonomic Chair ($369). Removable 3-way arms and a seat depth that adjusts from 18" to 22".
- Adjustable pick with a headrest: Autonomous ErgoChair Core ($299). Headrest, adjustable arms and seat depth for $299 on Autonomous’s site.

How to choose a chair for a small space
Measure the floor the chair really uses
The number that matters most is the base: the five-star base and its casters set the chair's floor footprint, and the seat and back usually sit inside it. The chairs here range from a 23.5-inch base (VIVO CHAIR-CL02B) to about 27.5–29 inches overall (MILLBERGET, Branch, ErgoChair Core). Add roughly a foot or more behind the chair so you can push back and stand up, and check that a door can still swing past it.
Decide whether you need armrests
Arms are the main reason a chair won't tuck under a desk. Most desks are about 29 inches tall, and the underside sits lower once you allow for the desktop, any apron and drawers (IKEA lists only 24 3/4 inches of clearance under the MICKE's drawer). Compare that with each chair's lowest armrest height:
- Armless: FLINTAN, LÅNGFJÄLL and the VIVO CHAIR-CL02B slide under any desk that clears the seat.
- Removable arms: Branch lists an armrest height of 26–29 inches, and the arms can come off if they don't clear.
- Fixed or add-on arms: the ErgoChair Core's arms go no lower than 27.8 inches from the floor; FLINTAN's optional arms start at 27 1/8 inches. IKEA doesn't list an armrest height for the MILLBERGET.
Check seat height against your desk
Seat-height ranges vary more than you'd expect. LÅNGFJÄLL goes down to 16 7/8 inches, while the ErgoChair Core starts at 20 inches, the highest minimum here. If your desk is a fixed 29 inches and you're on the shorter side, a lower seat range is worth more than extra features. If you're tall, look at the top of the range and at seat depth.
Seat size and weight rating
Smaller chairs often have smaller seats. LÅNGFJÄLL's seat is wide (20 7/8 inches) but shallow (16 1/8 inches deep), while FLINTAN's is narrower and deeper. Weight ratings here run from 220 lbs (VIVO) to 276 lbs (FLINTAN and LÅNGFJÄLL, both tested to ANSI/BIFMA x5.1 according to IKEA).
The picks, in detail
IKEA FLINTAN Office Chair
Who it's for: Anyone who wants a simple, armless task chair that disappears under a small desk.
FLINTAN is IKEA's basic mesh-back office chair. IKEA lists it at 28 inches wide and 28 inches deep overall, with an 18 1/8" x 19 1/4" seat and a seat height of 17 3/4 to 22 7/8 inches. In its armless form there's nothing to catch on the desk edge, so it can slide under most desks when you're done.
IKEA says it's tested to ANSI/BIFMA x5.1 and for 276 lb, and it carries a 10-year limited warranty. The seat cover is removable and washable. At $99.99 it was the lowest-priced chair here on the day we checked. If you want arms, IKEA sells a version with armrests for $119.99. Those arms adjust from 27 1/8 to 32 1/4 inches off the floor, so check them against the underside of your desk.

Who it's for: People who like to sit cross-legged or shift position, and who need the narrowest wheel base.
VIVO's CHAIR-CL02B has the smallest base in this guide at 23.5 inches across. It's armless, with an 18.5" x 16.8" swivel seat and a seat height of 18.5 to 22 inches. The design is unusual: a separate, wide leg rest (27.5" x 17.5") sits in front of the seat so you can sit cross-legged or kneel, and the backrest moves up and down by 6 inches.
That leg rest is the catch for small rooms. With it, VIVO lists the chair at 27.5" x 28" overall, about the same as the other chairs here. VIVO rates it for 220 lbs, the lowest rating in this guide. It was $119.99 on VIVO's site.

- Armless
- Leg rest allows cross-legged sitting

Who it's for: People with a low desk or a desk with drawers, who want a chair that sits low and stays out of sight.
LÅNGFJÄLL is sold as a conference chair, but its numbers suit small rooms. IKEA lists it at 26 3/4 inches across and just 36 1/4 inches tall, with the lowest seat in this guide (16 7/8 to 20 7/8 inches). The armless version has no arms or tall back to catch on a desk, so it can tuck under even a desk with limited clearance.
The seat is wide at 20 7/8 inches but shallow at 16 1/8 inches deep. IKEA says it's tested for public use to ANSI/BIFMA x5.1 and EN 16139, for 276 lb, with tilt and height adjustment and a 10-year limited warranty. At $249.99 it costs more than FLINTAN, and a version with armrests is $279.99.

- Lowest seat height here (16 7/8")
- Low 36 1/4" back clears desks and windows

Who it's for: People whose desk is in a living room or bedroom and who want a padded chair rather than mesh.
MILLBERGET is an upholstered swivel chair with padded armrests. IKEA lists it at 27 1/2 inches across, with a 19 5/8" x 18 1/8" seat, a seat height of 17 3/4 to 22 7/8 inches, and a 48 3/8-inch maximum height. It's tested for 243 lb.
IKEA describes it as developed and tested for domestic use, and it doesn't list an armrest height, so measure the arms in a store (or check them against your desk after delivery) if tucking it away matters. At $129.99 it's a low-cost padded alternative to the mesh chairs here.

Who it's for: People who sit for long stretches and want more adjustment than an entry-level chair, in a medium footprint.
Branch lists its Ergonomic Chair at 25" W x 24" D x 38–42" H, with a 27.6-inch base diameter, so the base is what sets its floor footprint. The seat height runs from 17 to 21 inches and the seat depth adjusts from 18 to 22 inches, which helps both shorter and taller people. The armrests adjust in height, width and depth, and they can be removed.
Removable arms are useful in a small room: Branch lists the armrest height as 26 to 29 inches, and if they won't clear your desk you can take them off. Branch rates the chair for 275 lbs and gives it a 7-year warranty. It was $369 on Branch's site, the most expensive chair here.

Two numbers matter for small spaces. The seat height starts at 20 inches, the highest minimum here, which suits taller people better than shorter ones. What size office chair fits a small room?
Look at the base diameter or overall width and depth. Most chairs here are 26 3/4–29 inches across; the VIVO CHAIR-CL02B has a 23.5-inch base. Leave roughly a foot or more behind the chair to roll back and stand up.
Will an office chair fit under my desk?
Compare the chair’s lowest armrest height with the clearance under your desk. Armless chairs (IKEA FLINTAN, IKEA LÅNGFJÄLL, VIVO CHAIR-CL02B) only need the seat and back to clear. The Branch Ergonomic Chair’s arms can be removed.
Are armless office chairs better for small spaces?
They are easier to tuck away, because nothing catches on the desk edge. The trade-off is that you lose somewhere to rest your forearms. Removable arms, like Branch’s, give you the choice.
What seat height do I need?
It depends on your height and your desk. A typical fixed desk is about 29 inches tall. The lowest seat here is LÅNGFJÄLL (16 7/8 inches); the ErgoChair Core starts at 20 inches.
Did you test these chairs?
No. We compared manufacturers’ published dimensions, weight ratings and prices. See How We Research for details.
