Small Bedroom Desk Setup: 7 Layouts That Work (With Measurements and a Desk for Each)

In a small bedroom, the bed decides where everything else goes. A queen bed takes 60 by 80 inches before you add a nightstand, and a desk then has to fit into what's left without blocking the closet door, the window or the walk to the bed. That's why the best small desk for a bedroom is usually the one that suits the spot, not the one with the most surface: a shallow desk under the window, a corner desk in the dead corner, a fold-down desk on the one free wall.
This guide starts with the four measurements to take, then walks through seven small bedroom desk setups that work, each with the clearances it needs and one desk from our other guides that fits it. We haven't tested these desks hands-on. Specs come from each maker's product page or the Amazon listing, as dated in the comparison table, and every pick has a video showing the same model we link. This guide is part of our how to set up a small home office series, at the step for picking the spot.

TL;DR: Our top picks
- Best small desk under a window: IKEA MICKE Desk, 28 3/4" x 19 5/8" ($69.99). Only 28 3/4" wide and 19 5/8" deep, 29 1/2" tall, with a drawer, so it fits under most windows and between a bed and a wall.
- Best corner desk for a bedroom: VIVO E1L Corner Electric Desk, 47" x 47" (Check current price). A 47" x 47" electric corner desk, 18.7" deep on each side, that rises from 28.5" to 46.5".
- Best wall-mounted desk for a bedroom: VIVO Wall Mounted 43" x 18" Folding Workbench (Check current price). A 43.3" x 18" top on steel brackets that folds to 2.3" from the wall; rated for 110 lbs.
- Best for the foot of the bed: WOHOMO Folding Desk, 31.5" (Check current price). 31.5" x 15.75", one of the shallowest desks we cover, and it folds to 2.76" thick.
- Best for a closet nook: Autonomous Desk Core ($349 at Autonomous's own store at the time of writing). A 48" x 24" electric desk, the same depth as a standard reach-in closet, 29.4" to 47.5" tall.
- Best L-shaped desk for a bedroom corner: SHW Mission 48 x 48 L-Shape Desk (Check current price). A 48" x 48" L with one 20"-deep and one 16"-deep side, so it gives two work surfaces in one corner.
- Best when the bed is your seat: Tribesigns Portable C-Shaped Table for Couch and Bed (Check current price). A 31.5" x 15.75" C-shaped table, 30" to 36" tall, whose base slides under a bed or sofa on casters.

Before you pick a layout: four measurements
Write these down before you look at any desk. Each layout below comes back to them.
- The free wall. Measure every stretch of wall the bed, closet door and window don't already claim, corner to corner or to the nearest obstacle. A laptop needs about 30 inches of desk; a laptop, a monitor and a lamp need 40 to 48.
- The chair zone. Plan about 36 inches from the front edge of the desk to the bed or anything else behind you, so you can pull the chair out and stand up. About 30 inches can work with an armless chair that tucks fully under the desk; see our compact office chairs.
- The walkway. Keep about 24 to 30 inches clear beside the bed and 30 to 36 inches on the main path from the door. Check the swing of the bedroom door, the closet door and any wardrobe doors near the desk.
- The window and outlets. Note the sill height, any radiator or vent under it, and where the nearest outlet is. Daylight from the side of the desk is easiest on the eyes and on video calls.
A quick way to see whether a desk fits: add the desk depth to the chair zone. A 20-inch-deep desk plus 36 inches of chair space needs about 56 inches, or 4 feet 8 inches, of clear floor from the wall. If that runs into the bed, you need a shallower desk, an armless chair or a different wall. Common bed sizes help with the math: a twin is about 38 x 75 inches, a full 54 x 75 and a queen 60 x 80.
7 small bedroom desk layouts that work
The video below runs through 20 small bedroom office ideas, from floating corner desks to compact desks with shelves above, and it's a useful way to see which of the layouts below suits your room before you measure:
1. A small desk under the window
Often the one wall the bed doesn't use. A desk under the window gets daylight on the desk and a view, and it keeps the desk out of the walkway. Check that the desk clears the sill (most fixed desks are 28 to 30 inches tall), that there's no radiator or vent where your knees go, and that the curtains or blinds still work. Light coming straight at you through the window can make a monitor harder to read, so this layout suits a laptop best; with a monitor, set it to one side of the window rather than in front of it. A desk 18 to 20 inches deep is plenty here. Pick: the IKEA MICKE.
2. A corner desk in the dead corner
The corner farthest from the door, or the one between the bed and a wall, is often empty floor anyway. A corner desk uses two walls, so you get more surface for the same floor. Leave the chair zone on the diagonal: about 36 inches out from the inside corner of the desk. The layout photo at the top of this guide shows a 48-inch desk in the corner of a 10 x 11 ft bedroom with a 36-inch chair zone and a 36-inch walkway. Pick: the VIVO E1L 47".
3. A wall-mounted or floating desk
When there's no floor to spare, put the desk on the wall. A wall-mounted or fold-down desk takes only a few inches when it's closed, so the room works as a bedroom again at night. Mount the top at the height you'd want a fixed desk, usually 28 to 30 inches for a seated desk, and into studs, brick or concrete as the maker specifies. Most are 18 inches deep or less, which suits a laptop. Pick: the VIVO MOUNT-SF1FB.
4. A narrow desk facing the foot of the bed
If the wall opposite the foot of the bed is free, a shallow desk can go there, with the chair between the desk and the bed. It needs the most careful math: desk depth plus at least 30 to 36 inches for the chair. A 16-inch-deep desk needs about 46 to 52 inches between the wall and the end of the bed; a 24-inch desk needs about 54 to 60. A folding desk suits this spot because you can fold it flat when you need the floor back. Pick: the WOHOMO 31.5".
5. A desk in the closet
A standard reach-in closet is about 24 inches deep, the same depth as many compact desks, and the shelves above become storage. Measure the inside width as well as the door opening, since the desk has to fit through the opening, and leave about 36 inches in front for the chair. Closets need a plan for power, light and air; our closet office (cloffice) setup guide covers widths, three layouts and ventilation. For a sit-stand desk, check the shelf above clears the desk at its standing height plus your monitor. Pick: the Autonomous Desk Core.
6. An L-shaped desk in the corner
If you need two work surfaces, such as a monitor on one side and paperwork or a sewing machine on the other, a small L-shaped desk gets them into one corner. Block out roughly 5 1/2 to 6 feet along each wall from the corner: the 48-inch L plus room to roll the chair back. This is the layout that most needs a room of about 10 x 10 feet or bigger with a full or queen bed. Pick: the SHW 48" L-desk.
7. The bed as your seat
In the smallest rooms, there may be no space for a desk and a chair at all. A C-shaped table slides its base under the bed so the top sits over your lap, and a lap desk does the same on your knees; our laptop desks for bed and couch guide compares both. It works for an hour or two of email, not a full workday: sit up against a firm pillow, keep the screen as high as you can and get up often. Measure the gap under the bed frame and compare it with the table's base before you buy. Pick: the Tribesigns C0434.
Which layout for which bedroom
- Under about 9 x 10 ft, or a queen bed in a 10 x 10 room: a wall-mounted desk, a desk under the window or the bed-as-seat setup. These take the least floor.
- About 10 x 10 to 10 x 12 ft: a 40- to 48-inch desk or corner desk in the corner farthest from the door, as in the layout photo above.
- A room with a reach-in closet you can give up: the closet nook, which keeps the whole office behind a door.
- A room you share: a fold-down wall desk or a folding desk you can put away, plus a lamp that lights only the desk.
- Two screens or lots of paper: an L-desk or a corner desk, or a 48-inch desk with both screens on one mount; see our dual monitor setup for a small desk.
The picks, in detail
IKEA MICKE Desk, 28 3/4" x 19 5/8"
Who it's for: Laptop users who want a simple fixed desk under a window, beside the bed or in a narrow gap, with no drilling.
IKEA's MICKE is one of the smallest real desks we cover: 28 3/4 inches wide and 19 5/8 inches deep, at a fixed 29 1/2 inches tall, with 24 3/4 inches of clearance underneath for your knees. IKEA rates it for 110 lbs and the drawer for 7 lbs. That width fits under most single windows and into the gap between a bed and a wall, and the depth leaves room for the chair in a tight room.
It's a laptop desk more than a monitor desk: at under 20 inches deep, a monitor sits close to your face unless you put it on a monitor arm. The drawer holds the chargers and notebooks you'd otherwise leave on the desktop. It's also the narrow-closet pick in our cloffice guide. The video is an independent review of the MICKE.
Pros
- 28 3/4" x 19 5/8": fits under a window
- Drawer for small things
- No drilling
Cons
- Tight for a laptop plus a monitor
- Fixed 29 1/2" height
- Assembly required

Who it's for: People with an empty bedroom corner who want more surface than a straight desk, and the option to stand.
VIVO's E1L puts an electric sit-stand frame under a 47.2 x 47.2-inch L-shaped top. Each side is 18.7 inches deep (21.2 inches at the corner), which is shallow for a corner desk and keeps it out of the walkway. VIVO lists a height range of 28.5 to 46.5 inches, a single motor with three memory presets and a 154-lb capacity.
The corner is where the monitor goes, so you sit on the diagonal with room for a laptop or papers on each side. Because the desk rises, a short person can set it lower than a standard 29-inch desk too. It needs an outlet nearby. VIVO also sells a 55-inch version for bigger rooms. Our corner desks guide compares it with fixed and larger options. The video is VIVO's own video of this 47-inch desk.
Pros
- 47" x 47", 18.7" deep per side
- Sit-stand, 28.5" to 46.5"
- Three memory presets
Cons
- Needs an outlet
- Takes a full corner

Who it's for: Laptop users with one free wall and studs, brick or concrete to mount to, who want the desk gone at night.
VIVO sells the MOUNT-SF1FB as a folding workbench, but its numbers suit a bedroom laptop desk. VIVO lists a 43.3 x 18-inch top, 1 inch thick, on steel brackets that fold down to 2.3 inches from the wall. It's rated for 110 lbs, and you choose the height when you mount it.
VIVO lists wood studs, brick or concrete as the mounting options, and its manual says not to install it into drywall alone. The 18-inch depth is fine for a laptop and a lamp but tight for a monitor. Pair it with a chair or stool that tucks under the desk so the floor clears when it's folded. Our wall-mounted desks guide has options with storage and a sit-stand version. The video is VIVO's own video of this folding desk.
Pros
- Folds to 2.3" from the wall
- 43.3" wide, 110 lb rating
- Mount it at your height
Cons
- 18" deep: tight for a monitor
- Needs studs, brick or concrete
- Sold as a workbench

Who it's for: Anyone squeezing a desk into the gap between the end of the bed and the wall, or who wants a desk that folds away.
WOHOMO's folding desk is 31.5 inches wide and only 15.75 inches deep, at a fixed 29.52 inches tall, which makes it one of the easiest desks to fit between the foot of a bed and the wall. The Amazon listing rates it for 200 lbs, and the legs fold under the top, held by nylon buckles, so it folds to 2.76 inches thick and slides behind a door or under the bed. It weighs about 15 lbs.
At under 16 inches deep it's a laptop-and-notebook desk; for a monitor, use a clamp-on monitor arm or a wall mount behind it. Light assembly is required, with tools included. For bigger folding desks, see our folding desks guide. The video is a one-minute look at the oak-and-white version we link, including assembly and folding.
Pros
- Only 15.75" deep

Who it's for: People turning a 48-inch-plus reach-in or walk-in closet into an office, who want to sit and stand.
The Autonomous Desk Core is a 48 x 24-inch electric desk. Its 24-inch depth matches a standard reach-in closet, and Autonomous lists a height range of 29.4 to 47.5 inches including the top, a single motor and a 176-lb capacity. Autonomous lists a 2-year warranty and free 30-day returns on its product page.
Measure the closet's inside width and the door opening before you order: the top needs a 48-inch-plus space, and the desk has to go in through the opening. If you plan to stand, the lowest shelf above has to clear the desk at full height plus your monitor, so you may need to raise or remove it. It also needs an outlet in or near the closet. Out of a closet, it's just as good on the long wall of a bedroom. The video is Autonomous's own short clip of the Desk Core.
Pros
- 48" x 24": matches closet depth
- Sit-stand, 29.4" to 47.5"
- 30-day returns (product page)
Cons
- Needs a 48"+ wide space
- Needs an outlet
- Shelves above may need raising

Who it's for: People who need two work zones, such as a monitor and a paper or hobby area, and have a corner to give the desk.
SHW's Mission L-desk is 48 inches along each wall, with one side 20 inches deep and the other 16 inches deep, at a fixed 28 inches tall. The Amazon listing rates it for 110.2 lbs and lists a powder-coated steel frame, an engineered wood top and a 5-year limited warranty.
The deeper side takes the monitor and the shallower one a laptop, a notebook or a printer, so you turn your chair rather than clear the desk. In a bedroom, it's the biggest desk in this guide, so plan the full 5 1/2 to 6 feet from the corner along each wall. Our small L-shaped desks guide has larger and sit-stand options. The video is an independent owner review of the black 48-inch desk after two years of use.
Pros
- 48" x 48" L, two work zones

Who it's for: People in very small bedrooms who work from the bed for part of the day and have no room for a chair.
Tribesigns' C0434 is a C-shaped table with a 31.5 x 15.75-inch top that adjusts from 30 to 36 inches tall. The base slides under a bed or sofa so the top sits over your lap, and four locking casters let you roll it away. Two tiers of shelves hold a charger or a book. Tribesigns doesn't list a weight capacity on Amazon, so keep it to a laptop and a drink.
It beats balancing a laptop on a pillow, but it isn't a full-day desk: sitting up in bed puts your back and neck in a harder position than a chair does. Check the gap under your bed frame against the base. For lap desks and other options, see our laptop desks for bed and couch guide. The video is Tribesigns' own 22-second clip of the brown C0434.
Pros
- Base slides under the bed
- 30" to 36" adjustable
- Locking casters
Cons
- No weight capacity listed
- Not for a full workday
- Check bed-frame clearance

- Light: a bedroom ceiling light is usually behind you. A clamp-on or wall lamp or a monitor light bar lights the desk without taking desktop space, and a small webcam light lights your face on calls.
- Storage: small bedroom office ideas usually come down to going up and under. Use the wall above the desk for shelves and the space below for a rolling cart; see our under-desk storage ideas and small desk organizers.
- Cables: a power strip under the desk with one cord to the wall keeps cables off the floor beside the bed; see cable management under a small desk.
- Comfort: if your feet don't reach the floor with your elbows at desk height, add an under-desk footrest.
- Switching off: face the desk away from the bed if you can, and clear it at night. A fold-down desk or a closet door helps the room feel like a bedroom again.

FAQ
What size desk fits a small bedroom?
For a laptop, about 28 to 36 inches wide and 16 to 20 inches deep, like the IKEA MICKE (28 3/4 x 19 5/8 in) or the WOHOMO folding desk (31.5 x 15.75 in). For a laptop plus a monitor, about 40 to 48 inches wide and 24 inches deep, or a shallower desk with a monitor arm.
Where should a desk go in a small bedroom?
Usually on the wall or in the corner the bed doesn’t use, with the window to the side of the desk if possible and the desk facing away from the bed. Check that you keep about 36 inches behind the desk for the chair and about 24 to 30 inches of walkway beside the bed.
How much space do you need between a bed and a desk?
About 36 inches from the front of the desk to the bed lets you pull the chair out and stand up. Around 30 inches can work with an armless chair that tucks fully under the desk.
Can you put a desk at the foot of the bed?
Yes, if there is room for the desk depth plus a chair between the wall and the end of the bed. A 16-inch-deep desk needs about 46 to 52 inches; a 24-inch desk about 54 to 60. A folding or wall-mounted desk helps when the space is tight.
Is a corner desk good for a small bedroom?
Often, because a corner is usually empty floor anyway. A corner desk like the VIVO E1L (47 x 47 in, 18.7 in deep per side) gives more surface than a straight desk in the same floor area. Leave about 36 inches on the diagonal for the chair.
Should a desk face a window?
It can, and a desk under the window often uses wall the bed doesn’t need. Light straight in front of you can make a monitor harder to read, so put the monitor to one side of the window, or set the desk so the window is to your side.
Did you test these desks?
No. We compared the makers’ product pages and Amazon listings and watched each product video. See How We Research.
About this guide
We chose seven layouts that come up again and again in small bedrooms and matched each with a desk from our desk, corner desk, wall-mounted, folding, L-shaped and laptop desk guides, each with a real product video that shows the same model we link. Specs come from IKEA, VIVO and Autonomous product pages and from the Amazon listings for the WOHOMO, SHW and Tribesigns desks, retrieved on the dates shown in the comparison table. Clearances (about 36 inches for a chair zone and 24 to 36 inches for walkways) follow common room-planning guidance; bed sizes are standard US mattress sizes, and frames add a few inches. The room photo is an illustrative layout, not a photo of the products. We did not test these products hands-on and don't publish star ratings of our own.
