In a small home office, the light is usually in the wrong place for video calls. A ceiling light sits above and behind you, a window throws one side of your face into shadow, and the brightest thing in front of you is the monitor, which lights your face blue from below. A webcam light fixes that with a small, soft light aimed at your face from just above or beside the camera. Most of them clip onto the monitor and run off a USB port, so they don't take any desk space either. For where the desk, camera and window should go in the first place, see how to set up a small home office.

A webcam light does a different job from the other desk lights we cover. A monitor light bar points down at the keyboard and a desk lamp lights papers; neither is aimed at your face. We compared four well-reviewed webcam lights sold on Amazon on the things that matter in a small room: how bright they get, how they mount, how close the color is to daylight, and what power they need. As with all our guides, we haven't tested these hands-on. The specs come from each maker's spec page or Amazon listing, linked below.

TL;DR: Our top picks

  1. Best overall: Logitech Litra Glow Premium LED Streaming Light (Check current price). Small, soft 250-lumen light on a telescoping monitor mount, with CRI 93 and 2700K–6500K; 4.5 stars from about 3,400 Amazon ratings.
  2. Brightest (dim rooms): Elgato Key Light Neo with Monitor Mount (Check current price). Up to 1,000 lumens from a 5.9" edge-lit panel that sits on the monitor, with onboard controls and no software needed.
  3. Best budget: NEEWER Basics 5" Clip-On Ring Light BR60 with Desk Tripod (Check current price). A 5" clip-on ring light with CRI 97+, five color modes and a mini tripod, for a fraction of the price; 4.4 stars from about 2,000 ratings.
  4. Softest, widest light: Logitech G Litra Beam Premium LED Key Light (Check current price). A 15.7" light bar on its own adjustable stand that lights your face more evenly than a small square light.

How to choose a webcam light for a small office

Four checks cover most of the decision. Before you buy, sit where you take calls, turn your camera on and look at where the shadows fall.

1. Decide where it mounts

In a small room, the best place for the light is on top of the monitor next to the webcam, so it lights your face from the same direction the camera sees it. The Litra Glow rests on the monitor on a telescoping mount, the Key Light Neo sits on the monitor's top edge on a mount with a sticky base, and the NEEWER BR60 clips onto screens under 1 inch thick. The Litra Beam is the exception: it stands on its own 5.9-inch round base, so it needs a small spot on the desk beside or behind the monitor. If your webcam already sits on the top edge, check that there's room for both, or put the light just above the camera on its telescoping mount.

2. Match brightness to the room

You don't need much. Your face is only 20 to 30 inches from the light, so 250 to 400 lumens is plenty in a room with some daylight or a ceiling light, and you'll often run it at half power. More brightness helps in a dark closet or bedroom office in the evening, or if you sit with a bright window behind you. The Key Light Neo goes up to 1,000 lumens on a strong power supply; the Litra Glow tops out at 250. A dimmer light at the right angle beats a bright one at the wrong angle.

3. Check color temperature and CRI

Color temperature is how warm or cool the light looks: around 2700K is warm, like a household bulb, and 5500K–6500K is close to daylight. Pick a light whose range overlaps the other light in your room, so your face isn't one color and the background another. All four here adjust roughly from 2700–3000K up to 6000–7000K. CRI (color rendering index) describes how naturally skin tones show up; 90 or higher is good, and all four lights list 93 or above.

4. Power and controls

All four run on USB, but brightness can depend on the port. The Key Light Neo gives 400 lumens from a USB-A port, 700 from USB-C and 1,000 from a 3A power supply. Logitech lists a USB 3.0 port for the Litra Glow and a 5V/1.4A supply for the Litra Beam at full brightness, and the NEEWER needs 5V/2A, more than some older monitor ports provide. If a light flickers or won't reach full brightness, try a phone charger instead of the monitor. For controls, the Elgato and Logitech lights have buttons on the light plus optional desktop apps; the NEEWER has buttons only.

Logitech Litra Glow Premium LED Streaming Light

Video: Logitech on YouTube. Logitech's own video of the Litra Glow streaming light.

Who it's for: Most people who take calls at a monitor in a small room and want a light that just works.

Litra Glow is a small square light, 3.56 inches on each side, made for desktop video. Logitech rates it at 250 lumens with a color rendering index of 93, and color temperature runs from 2700K to 6500K. Its frameless diffuser spreads the light wide and soft, which matters with a wide-angle webcam, where a harsh light shows up as a bright patch on one side of your face. Logitech also says it has passed UL testing for all-day use.

The monitor mount is the reason it suits small desks. It rests on top of the screen and telescopes up to 4 inches, extends 2 inches forward, and swivels a full circle, so you can lift the light above a webcam or move it to one side. Take the mount off and there's a standard 1/4-20 tripod thread underneath. It runs off a USB-C to USB-A cable (Logitech lists a USB 3.0 port), with buttons on the back and optional control through Logitech's free G HUB app. On Amazon it's an Amazon's Choice item with 4.5 stars from about 3,400 ratings.

Pros

  • Soft, wide light from a small 3.56" square
  • Mount telescopes 4" and swivels 360°
  • CRI 93; 2700K–6500K (Logitech figures)
  • 4.5 stars from about 3,400 ratings

Cons

  • 250 lumens: modest in a dark room
  • Software needed for presets

Elgato Key Light Neo with Monitor Mount

Video: Elgato Workshop on YouTube. Elgato's own explainer video for the Key Light Neo.

Who it's for: Evening callers, closet and bedroom offices without much light, and anyone with a window behind them.

Key Light Neo is a 5.9-inch square edge-lit panel, the newest of Elgato's small lights. Its brightness depends on what you plug it into: Elgato lists 400 lumens from a USB-A port, 700 lumens from USB-C and 1,000 lumens from a 3A power supply, which makes it the brightest light here. Color temperature runs from 2900K to 7000K, and Elgato lists a CRI above 94%. The light comes from the edges through a diffuser, so the panel itself glows evenly rather than showing bright LED points, which is easier on your eyes during a long call.

It sits on top of the monitor on a mount with a self-adhesive base that Elgato describes as sticky but residue-free, and it also works on a laptop screen. A dial and two preset buttons on the light change brightness and color, so there's nothing to install, while an optional app adds Wi-Fi control when it runs from a 3A supply. Elgato includes a cable, a 59-inch USB extension and a USB-C adapter. It has fewer Amazon ratings than the others here (4.3 stars from about 210) and is sold through Elgato's store on Amazon.

Pros

  • Up to 1,000 lumens with a 3A supply (Elgato figure)
  • Edge-lit panel: even, low-glare light
  • Onboard dial and presets; no software needed
  • Extension cable and USB-C adapter included

Cons

  • Brightness drops on a plain USB-A port (400 lm)
  • Fewer Amazon ratings so far (about 210)

NEEWER Basics 5" Clip-On Ring Light BR60 with Desk Tripod

Video: Neewer Official on YouTube. NEEWER's own video of the BR60 5" ring light.

Who it's for: Anyone who wants better light on calls for the least money, or a second light for the other side.

NEEWER's BR60 is a 5-inch ring light with 60 LEDs, sold with both a screen clip and a mini desk tripod. NEEWER rates it at 450 lux at about 20 inches (0.5 m), with a CRI of 97 or higher, and a mode button cycles through five color settings from warm 3000K to cool 6000K, each with ten brightness steps. A ring light lights your face evenly from straight on, which flattens shadows, and it shows as a small ring reflection in your eyes and in glasses.

The clip fits screens under 1 inch thick. NEEWER notes that the side with the hole should face the camera so it doesn't block the lens. On the tripod, it stands about 3.5 inches tall and tilts and swivels. It draws 10W at 5V/2A through a built-in 6-foot cable, so it may need a phone charger rather than a monitor port. It's an Amazon's Choice item with 4.4 stars from about 2,000 ratings and is sold through NEEWER's store on Amazon.

Pros

  • Lowest price here
  • CRI 97+ (NEEWER figure)
  • Clip and mini tripod both included
  • 4.4 stars from about 2,000 ratings

Cons

  • Five fixed color modes rather than stepless
  • Needs a 5V/2A port; cable is built in
  • Ring reflections show in glasses

Softest, widest light

Logitech G Litra Beam Premium LED Key Light

Video: Logitech For Creators on YouTube. Logitech's own video of the original Litra Beam. We list the current Logitech G version, which has the same light and stand and adds Bluetooth control.

Who it's for: People who sit back from the camera, wear glasses, or want a light that looks like part of the desk.

Litra Beam is a different shape: a 15.7-inch light bar on its own desk stand. A long light source lights your face more evenly than a small square one, with softer shadows, and it can stand upright beside the monitor or turn sideways above it. Logitech rates it at 320 lumens with a CRI of 93 and color temperature from 2700K to 6500K. Logitech G's current version adds Bluetooth, so you can control it from the G HUB app without a USB data connection.

The trade-off on a small desk is the stand. It adjusts from 14.6 to 24.2 inches tall and sits on a 5.9-inch round base, so it takes a small spot on the desk where the other three use none. Logitech lists a USB 3.1 Gen 2 port or a 5V/1.4A adapter for full brightness, and the 6.5-foot cable is long enough to reach a charger. It's an Amazon's Choice item with 4.5 stars from about 170 ratings. It's also the most expensive light here, so check the current price before deciding the wider light is worth it.

Pros

  • Long 15.7" bar: soft, even light
  • Stand adjusts 14.6"–24.2"; light rotates
  • Buttons, plus G HUB over USB or Bluetooth
  • 4.5 stars on Amazon

Cons

  • Needs a 5.9" spot on the desk
  • Most expensive light here
  • Fewer Amazon ratings so far (about 170)

Webcam light vs monitor light bar vs desk lamp

All three are small desk lights, but each points somewhere different. A webcam light points at your face, so the camera sees you clearly. A monitor light bar points down at the keyboard and is shaped to keep light off the screen; it does nothing for your face on camera. A clamp or wall desk lamp lights papers and the desk around you. On a small desk, a light bar plus a webcam light covers screen work and calls with no desk space used. Elgato also designs the Key Light Neo to double as a soft desk light when you're off camera.

Setting up a webcam light in a small room

  • Light from slightly above. Put the light at or a little above eye level, close to the camera. Light from below looks unflattering, and light from far to one side leaves half your face in shadow.
  • Face the window, don't sit with it behind you. A window behind you turns you into a silhouette, and no small light can fully fix that. If you can, turn the desk so the window is in front or to the side. In a closet office, a webcam light matters most, because there's usually no window at all.
  • Start at half brightness. Too much light washes out your face and makes you squint. Lower the brightness until your face is just brighter than the background.
  • Match the room. Set the color temperature close to your ceiling light or daylight, warmer in the evening, cooler in the day.
  • Glasses: raise the light higher or move it slightly to one side so the reflection falls outside the lenses.
  • Tidy the cable. Run it down the back of the monitor or monitor arm; our cable management guide covers the rest.

FAQ

Do I need a webcam light for video calls?

Not if you sit facing a window in daytime. In most small home offices, though, the main light is above or behind you, so a small light near the camera usually makes a bigger difference to how you look on calls than anything else on the desk.

Ring light or panel light for a webcam?

A ring light like the NEEWER BR60 lights your face evenly from straight on and is cheap, but it shows as a ring in your eyes and glasses. A small panel like the Litra Glow or Key Light Neo can be set to one side for softer, more natural shadows. Either works well at desk distance.

How bright should a webcam light be?

At 20 to 30 inches from your face, 250 to 400 lumens is plenty in most rooms, and you will often use it at half power. More brightness, like the Key Light Neo’s 1,000 lumens with a 3A supply, helps in dark rooms or with a window behind you.

Can I power a webcam light from my monitor or laptop?

Usually, but brightness can depend on the port. The Key Light Neo reaches 400 lumens on USB-A and 700 on USB-C. The NEEWER BR60 needs 5V/2A, which some older monitor ports can’t supply, so a phone charger can work better.

Will a webcam light work with a laptop?

The Key Light Neo and NEEWER BR60 can sit on or clip to a laptop screen; the NEEWER’s clip fits screens under 1" thick. A heavier light on a thin laptop lid can tip it back, so check the hinge holds the screen steady.
