A small home office still collects paper: tax returns, leases, warranties, client files. A small filing cabinet keeps it in one place, and the best ones tuck under the desk or roll beside it. The catch is fit. A cabinet that's an inch too tall won't slide under the desktop, one that's too deep sticks out past the front edge, and not every "file cabinet" takes legal-size folders. For planning the rest of the room around it, see how to set up a small home office.

We picked five small filing cabinets for home offices, mostly 2- and 3-drawer models from 14.25 to 18.2 inches wide, plus one low, wide cabinet that doubles as a printer stand and a fire-resistant file box for the papers you can't replace. Three of the five lock. As with all our guides, we haven't tested these hands-on. The specs come from each maker's product page or Amazon listing, checked on Oct. 18, 2026 and linked below.

TL;DR: Our top picks

  1. Best overall: Mount-It! Mobile File Cabinet with 3 Drawers (MI-941B) (Check current price). A steel 3-drawer cabinet on wheels with one lock for all three drawers and a file drawer for letter, legal or A4 folders.
  2. Narrowest 2-drawer: Space Solutions 18" Deep 2-Drawer Mobile Vertical File Cabinet (Check current price). Only 14.25 inches wide, welded steel, a cam lock for both drawers, and it arrives assembled.
  3. Best wood look: DEVAISE 3-Drawer Wood File Cabinet (Walnut) (Check current price). A walnut-finish 3-drawer cabinet on wheels that looks like furniture, with rails for letter, A4 or legal files.
  4. Best printer stand: DEVAISE 3-Drawer Lateral File Cabinet and Printer Stand (Check current price). A low, 32-inch-wide lateral cabinet with a file drawer, two small drawers and open shelves under a printer-size top.
  5. Best for important documents: SentrySafe Fire-Resistant and Waterproof File Box (HD4100) (Check current price). A locking file box UL Classified for 30 minutes of fire, with ETL Verified water protection, small enough for a closet shelf.

How to choose a small filing cabinet

1. Measure under the desk, not just the floor

If you want a small filing cabinet under the desk, measure from the floor to the lowest thing under the desktop: the frame, an apron, a drawer or a keyboard tray. Many desks are 28 to 30 inches tall at the top, but the clear space underneath is lower. The cabinets here run from 23.72 inches (the Mount-It, by its maker's numbers) to 26.7 inches tall on their casters, so leave at least half an inch of clearance on top so the cabinet rolls in without scraping. Then check depth: an 18-inch-deep cabinet under a 24-inch-deep desk leaves room for cables behind it, which our cable management guide helps with.

Under a sit-stand desk, the lowest sitting height is what counts, and the cabinet must stay clear of the legs and crossbar as the desk moves. Our small standing desks guide lists each frame's height range.

2. Check width against your knees

A filing cabinet under the desk takes space from your legs. On a 40-inch desk, a 14.25-inch cabinet like the Space Solutions leaves up to about 25 inches of knee room; an 18-inch one leaves about 22, less whatever the desk legs take. If your desk is narrower than that, put the cabinet beside the desk instead, or choose a small desk with open space under one end.

3. Letter, legal or A4

Most home paperwork in the US is letter size, and every cabinet here takes letter-size hanging folders. If you keep legal-size documents such as some contracts and court or real-estate papers, the Mount-It and the walnut DEVAISE also take legal folders; the Space Solutions and the lateral DEVAISE don't list legal size. Check whether the file drawer has its own hanging rails or needs a separate frame.

4. Decide what the lock is for

A cabinet lock keeps kids, roommates and guests out of your files, and on the Mount-It and Space Solutions one lock covers every drawer. It isn't a safe: none of the cabinets is rated for fire or forced entry. For passports, birth certificates and insurance papers, a fire-resistant box like the SentrySafe is the better place. The walnut DEVAISE doesn't list a drawer lock at all.

5. Wheels, steel or wood, and assembly

Locking front casters stop a cabinet rolling while you open a drawer, and a center caster, as on the Mount-It and the walnut DEVAISE, helps stop it tipping forward. The steel Mount-It and Space Solutions arrive assembled apart from casters and handles. The DEVAISE wood cabinets need assembly but look more like furniture in a bedroom office.

The picks, in detail

Best overall

Mount-It! Mobile File Cabinet with 3 Drawers (MI-941B)

Video: Mount-It! on YouTube. Mount-It!'s own video of the MI-941 mobile file cabinet, sold as MI-941B (black, linked here) and MI-941W (white).

Who it's for: Most small home offices: anyone who wants locking file storage that rolls under or beside the desk.

Mount-It's MI-941 has two shallow drawers on top for supplies and a deep bottom drawer for hanging files. Mount-It says the file drawer takes letter and legal folders, and its Amazon listing adds A4. One key lock secures all three drawers at once. It's steel and arrives assembled except for the five casters; the front two lock, and a center caster helps stop it tipping.

Mount-It lists it at 14.7 inches wide, 18.11 inches deep and 23.72 inches tall. Its Amazon listing gives 15.3 x 19.75 x 24.5 inches, so measure for the larger numbers. Mount-It says it fits under most standard desks. The Amazon listing mentions a lifetime warranty. We link the black version (MI-941B); a white MI-941W is also available. It had 4.2 stars from about 306 ratings on Amazon when we checked.

Pros

  • One lock for all 3 drawers
  • Takes letter, legal and A4 hanging files
  • Arrives assembled; 5 casters, 2 locking, plus anti-tip
  • Black or white

Cons

  • Mount-It and Amazon list slightly different sizes
  • Fewer ratings than the other picks

Narrowest 2-drawer

Space Solutions 18" Deep 2-Drawer Mobile Vertical File Cabinet

Video: Hirsh Industries on YouTube. Hirsh Industries' (Space Solutions' maker) own video of the mobile 2-drawer file cabinet in white, including attaching the casters.

Who it's for: Small desks where every inch of knee room counts, and anyone who mostly files letter-size paper.

At 14.25 inches wide, this Space Solutions cabinet (made by Hirsh Industries) is the narrowest here, so it leaves the most leg room. It's 18 inches deep and 26.7 inches tall with its four casters. That's the tallest of the cabinets here, so measure under the desk first. If you need a lower one, Space Solutions' non-mobile 2-drawer Smart File is 24.5 inches tall.

Both drawers are "high-side" drawers for letter-size hanging files, with no extra rails needed, and a single cam lock secures both. The cabinet is welded steel and arrives assembled; you add the handles and casters. The drawers open three-quarters of the way, and the casters don't lock. Space Solutions lists it as Greenguard Gold certified. The Pearl White version we link had 4.3 stars from about 620 ratings on Amazon.

Pros

  • Narrowest here at 14.25"
  • Cam lock secures both drawers
  • Welded steel; arrives assembled
  • Greenguard Gold certified

Cons

  • Letter size only
  • Casters don't lock
  • Tallest cabinet here (26.7" on casters)

Best wood look

DEVAISE 3-Drawer Wood File Cabinet (Walnut)

Video: Wlive Store on YouTube. The video from DEVAISE's seller channel (Wlive Store) showing the 3-drawer file cabinet in walnut.

Who it's for: Bedroom and living room offices where a gray steel cabinet would look out of place.

In a bedroom or living room, DEVAISE's walnut 3-drawer cabinet looks more like a nightstand on wheels than office furniture. The Amazon listing gives its size as 18.2 inches wide, 15.6 inches deep and 25.2 inches tall including the wheels (the listing's spec table rounds the height to 26 inches). At 15.6 inches, it's the shallowest cabinet here, which suits a shallow desk or a closet office.

The bottom drawer has adjustable hanging rails for letter, A4 or legal files, and all three drawers run on full-extension ball-bearing slides. It rolls on five casters, two with brakes, plus a center caster to keep it from tipping. DEVAISE says the top can hold a printer. The trade-offs: it's engineered wood that needs assembly, and the listing doesn't mention a drawer lock. It had 4.0 stars from about 2,341 ratings when we checked; walnut is one of several finishes.

Pros

  • Furniture look in walnut
  • Shallowest here (15.6" deep)
  • Letter, A4 or legal hanging rails
  • Full-extension drawers; anti-tip caster

Cons

  • No drawer lock listed
  • Assembly required
  • 18.2" wide takes more knee room

Best printer stand

DEVAISE 3-Drawer Lateral File Cabinet and Printer Stand

Video: Wlive Store on YouTube. The video from DEVAISE's seller channel (Wlive Store) showing this lateral file cabinet in Rustic Brown; the Amazon link goes to the Classic Black version.

Who it's for: Home offices with a printer and wall space beside the desk instead of under it.

If the cabinet will sit beside the desk anyway, a low lateral cabinet adds a surface for a printer. DEVAISE's printer stand cabinet is 32 inches wide, 16 inches deep and 26 inches tall on its casters, so the top sits a little below a typical desk. Two small drawers hold supplies, the bottom drawer takes letter or A4 hanging files, and open shelves on the other side hold paper, a scanner or binders. DEVAISE rates it at 150 pounds, spread evenly.

It rolls on four casters, and the front two have brakes. The listing's spec table mentions a key lock, but its feature list doesn't, so don't count on one. It's engineered wood and needs assembly. It doesn't list legal size. We link the Classic Black version, which had 4.2 stars from about 2,319 ratings; DEVAISE's video shows the Rustic Brown finish.

Pros

  • Printer-size top with open shelves
  • Letter and A4 file drawer
  • Low (26") to sit beside a desk
  • Front casters have brakes

Cons

  • 32" wide; not for under the desk
  • Lock not confirmed
  • Assembly required

Best for important documents

SentrySafe Fire-Resistant and Waterproof File Box (HD4100)

Video: SentrySafe on YouTube. SentrySafe's own video of the HD4100 file box, shown in an earlier gray finish; the current listing is black.

Who it's for: Anyone keeping passports, birth certificates, deeds or insurance papers at home.

The SentrySafe HD4100 isn't a filing cabinet in the usual sense; it's a lockable file box for the few papers you can't replace. SentrySafe's listing says it's UL Classified to withstand fire for up to 30 minutes and ETL Verified to protect its contents from water. It closes with a key lock, and two keys are included. Inside, it takes hanging file folders in a space 12 inches wide, 8.1 inches deep and 11.5 inches tall (0.65 cubic feet). That's enough for a household's key documents, but not years of bank statements.

Outside, it's 15.5 inches wide, 13.5 inches deep and 14.3 inches tall, small enough for a closet shelf or the bottom of a bigger cabinet. It weighs 38.8 pounds. It had 4.5 stars from about 15,200 ratings on Amazon, by far the most here. SentrySafe's video shows an earlier gray finish; the current listing is black.

Pros

  • UL Classified for 30 minutes of fire
  • ETL Verified water protection
  • Key lock with 2 keys
  • Fits on a closet shelf

Cons

  • Holds only a few inches of files
  • Heavy (38.8 lbs)
  • No wheels

Which small filing cabinet fits your space

Filing cabinets are for paper. For everything else under the desk, such as rolling carts, drawer units and hanging shelves, see our under-desk storage ideas. For mail and papers you use every day, an upright file organizer on the desk works better; see our small desk organizers.

FAQ

What size is a small filing cabinet?

The small 2- and 3-drawer filing cabinets we looked at are about 14 to 18 inches wide, 15 to 20 inches deep and 24 to 27 inches tall. The cabinets in this guide range from 14.25 inches wide (Space Solutions) to 18.2 inches (the walnut DEVAISE), plus one 32-inch-wide lateral cabinet.

Will a small filing cabinet fit under my desk?

Measure from the floor to the lowest point under the desktop, including any frame, apron or keyboard tray, and subtract about half an inch. The cabinets here are 23.72 to 26.7 inches tall on their casters. Check the depth too: an 18-inch-deep cabinet suits a desk at least 24 inches deep.

Is a small filing cabinet with a lock secure?

It keeps out casual snooping, which is what most home offices need. A cam or key lock on a steel or wood cabinet won't stop a determined thief or protect papers in a fire. Keep irreplaceable documents in a fire-resistant box like the SentrySafe HD4100.

Do I need a legal-size filing cabinet?

Usually not. Most home paperwork in the US is letter size. If you keep legal-size contracts or property papers, the Mount-It MI-941 and the walnut DEVAISE take legal folders; the Space Solutions 2-drawer is letter only.

Did you test these filing cabinets?

No. We compared manufacturer specs and listings. See How We Research.

About this guide

We looked for small 2- and 3-drawer filing cabinets that fit under or beside a home office desk, with at least one locking option, plus one fire-resistant file box. Each pick has a real product video from its maker or the maker's seller channel, shown in its section. Specs come from Mount-It's and Space Solutions' product pages and from the Amazon listings for all five, retrieved on Oct. 18, 2026. Where the maker and Amazon disagree, as with the Mount-It's dimensions, we show both. We left out cabinets whose Amazon listings were unavailable when we checked. Ratings come from Amazon listings on the same date. We did not test these products hands-on and don't publish star ratings of our own.
