The Best Wall-Mounted and Floating Desks (2026)

A wall-mounted desk takes the legs off the floor. A fold-down desk goes further: when you're done, it folds flat and sticks out only a few inches from the wall. In a studio, a narrow hallway or a bedroom that has to stay a bedroom, that can be the difference between having a desk and not having one.
The catch is the wall. A desk that hangs on brackets is only as strong as what it's screwed into, so the mounting requirements matter as much as the load rating. We compared five desks on the numbers that decide whether one will work for you: load rating, what the maker says it must be mounted to, and how deep it is folded and open. We didn't test these hands-on. Every figure comes from the maker's own product page or manual, linked below each pick.
TL;DR: Our top picks
- Best overall: UPLIFT Floating Desk ($199). A full 24"-deep work surface rated for 500 lb that folds to 2–2.75" from the wall.
- Best budget: VIVO Wall Mounted 43" x 18" Folding Workbench ($69.99). 43.3" x 18", rated for 110 lbs and folds to 2.3", for $69.99.
- Best with built-in storage: Floativa Wall Mounted Fold Down Desk with Storage Shelf ($279.99). A drop-leaf desk inside a 7.71"-deep wall unit with cubbies and shelves.
- Best freestanding alternative: IKEA IVAR Shelving Unit with Foldable Table ($270). Shelving with a fold-down table, 11 3/4" deep folded; it stands on the floor and is anchored to the wall.
- Best wall-mounted sit-stand desk: UPLIFT Wall Mounted Standing Desk ($419). Electric height adjustment from 22.6" to 48.7" with nothing on the floor.

How to choose a wall-mounted desk
Start with your wall
Every maker here is specific about what its desk can be mounted to, and the requirements differ:
- UPLIFT Floating Desk: wood-stud hardware included; UPLIFT doesn't recommend metal studs or concrete. The brackets can be spaced to line up with your studs.
- VIVO MOUNT-SF1FB: wood studs, brick or concrete. VIVO's manual says not to install into drywall alone.
- Floativa: the manual lists solid brick, load-bearing and hollow brick walls, and wood-board walls at least 15 mm thick, and doesn't recommend gypsum board or thin plywood.
- UPLIFT Wall Mounted Standing Desk: must attach directly to a wall stud, and needs a power outlet.
- IKEA IVAR: stands on the floor, but IKEA says it must be anchored to the wall to prevent tipping.
Use a stud finder before you buy, and check where the studs fall relative to where you want the desk. If you rent, check your lease before drilling. Anchoring furniture is usually treated differently from hanging a loaded desk, but the lease is what counts.
Load rating: think monitor, not laptop
Ratings here run from 88 lb (Floativa) and 110 lbs (VIVO) up to 500 lb (UPLIFT Floating Desk). A laptop is easy for any of them. A monitor on a clamp arm, a desktop PC and someone leaning on the edge add up faster. IKEA doesn't publish a load rating for the IVAR's table, and the UPLIFT standing desk's 175 lb is a lifting capacity that includes the desktop itself.
Depth folded vs open
Folded, the slimmest desks here stick out only 2–2.75 inches (UPLIFT Floating Desk) and 2.3 inches (VIVO). Floativa's whole unit is 7.71 inches deep, and the IVAR is 11 3/4 inches. Open, the work surfaces range from 18 inches deep (VIVO) to 24 inches (both UPLIFTs) and 37 3/8 inches (IVAR, including its frame). For a laptop, 18 inches is workable. With an external monitor, a deeper top or a monitor arm helps keep the screen at a comfortable distance.
Pick a height before you drill
A fixed wall desk is only comfortable at the height you mount it. Most fixed desks are about 29 inches tall, and IKEA's IVAR table is 29 1/2 inches. UPLIFT says its Floating Desk can be mounted at any height for sitting or standing, but once it's on the wall, that's the height. If more than one person uses the desk, or you want to alternate sitting and standing, the UPLIFT Wall Mounted Standing Desk is the only one here that adjusts.
Plan for what's on the desk when it folds
A fold-down desk has to be cleared before it folds. That's fine for a laptop and a notebook. If you use a monitor, mount it on the wall above the desk instead of on the desktop, and keep cables loose enough to fold.
The picks, in detail
UPLIFT Floating Desk
Who it's for: People who want a full-size work surface that folds flat, and who have wood studs to mount it to.
UPLIFT's Floating Desk is a desktop on heavy-duty steel fold-down brackets. The standard top is 42" x 24", with 48-, 60- and 72-inch widths available, and UPLIFT says it protrudes only 2 to 2.75 inches from the wall when folded, depending on the desktop thickness. Open, the 24-inch depth is the same as many full-size desks.
UPLIFT rates the brackets for 500 lb, by far the highest rating here. Wood-stud hardware is included, and UPLIFT doesn't recommend metal studs or concrete walls. You choose the mounting height, so it can be a sitting or a standing desk, but not both. It was $199 with a 42" x 24" laminate top on UPLIFT's site, and UPLIFT gives it a 15-year warranty.
Pros
- 500 lb load rating
- Folds to 2–2.75" from the wall
- Full 24"-deep top, several widths
- 15-year warranty
Cons
- Wood studs only per UPLIFT (not metal studs or concrete)
- Fixed height once mounted

Who it's for: Laptop users on a budget who want a desk that folds nearly flat, and who have studs, brick or concrete to mount to.
VIVO sells the MOUNT-SF1FB as a folding workbench, but its numbers also suit a laptop desk. VIVO lists a 43.3" x 18" top, 1 inch thick, on steel brackets, folding to 2.3 inches from the wall. It's rated for 110 lbs.
VIVO lists wood studs, brick or concrete as the mounting options, and its manual says not to install into drywall alone. The 18-inch depth is fine for a laptop but tight for a laptop plus a monitor. At $69.99 in black or white, it's the lowest-priced desk here by a wide margin.
Pros
- Lowest price here ($69.99)
- Folds to 2.3"
- 110 lb rating
- Studs, brick or concrete
Cons

Who it's for: People with brick or solid walls who want a desk and shelving in one shallow wall unit.
Floativa's fold-down desk is a 30.7-inch-wide, 50.15-inch-tall plywood wall unit with 8 open cubbies and a 6-tier shelf. The desk is a drop-leaf front that folds down to work and back up when you're done. Floativa lists the unit at 7.71 inches deep and rates it for 88 lb (40 kg). It doesn't list the depth of the work surface when open.
Check your walls first. The installation manual linked from the product page lists solid brick, load-bearing and hollow brick walls, and wood-board walls at least 15 mm thick, and doesn't recommend gypsum board or thin plywood walls. It doesn't address mounting into studs behind drywall. It was $279.99 on sale on Floativa's site on the day we checked (regular price listed as $350).
Pros
- Desk and storage in one 7.71"-deep unit
- Cubbies keep supplies off the desk
- 88 lb rating

Who it's for: People who can’t hang a loaded desk on the wall but can anchor a shelving unit, or who want lots of storage.
IVAR isn't wall-hung. It's a solid pine shelving unit, 35 inches wide and 70 1/2 inches tall, with a table that folds down from the front. IKEA lists it at 11 3/4 inches deep folded and 37 3/8 inches deep open, with a 29 1/2" x 31 1/2" table top at 29 1/2 inches high. The set includes a cabinet for storage.
Because the weight goes to the floor, the wall only has to stop it from tipping. IKEA's page carries a tipping warning and says it must be anchored to the wall with suitable screws and plugs. IKEA doesn't publish a load rating for the table. It was $270 on IKEA's site.
Pros
- Weight goes to the floor; the wall anchor only prevents tipping
- Lots of storage
- Deep work surface open
- Solid pine
Cons
- 11 3/4" deep folded, deeper than the wall-hung desks
- No published table load rating
- Must still be anchored to the wall

Who it's for: People who want to alternate sitting and standing without giving up any floor space.
This UPLIFT desk doesn't fold. Instead, a single electric lifting column mounts to the wall and moves a 42" x 24" (or 48" x 24") desktop between 22.6 and 48.7 inches high, according to UPLIFT's spec sheet. Nothing touches the floor, so the space underneath stays open. The frame itself is 23.6 inches wide and 11.8 inches deep.
UPLIFT says it must attach directly to a wall stud. It lists a 175 lb lifting capacity that includes the desktop's own weight, and it needs a 100–120V outlet. Because it stays 24 inches deep, it saves floor space rather than depth. It was $419 with a 42" x 24" laminate top on UPLIFT's site, and it carries UPLIFT's 15-year warranty.
Pros
- Electric sit-stand, 22.6"–48.7"
- Nothing on the floor
- 15-year warranty
Cons
- Doesn’t fold: always 24" deep
- Needs a wall stud and a power outlet
- 175 lb capacity includes the desktop
- Highest price here

Can a wall-mounted desk go on drywall?
Not on drywall alone, for the desks here. VIVO says not to install into drywall alone; UPLIFT supplies wood-stud hardware; and Floativa’s manual doesn’t recommend gypsum board. Mount into studs, brick or concrete as each maker specifies.
How much weight can a fold-down desk hold?
It depends on the brackets and the wall. Ratings here range from 88 lb (Floativa) and 110 lbs (VIVO MOUNT-SF1FB) to 500 lb (UPLIFT Floating Desk). IKEA doesn’t publish one for the IVAR table.
How far does a fold-down desk stick out when folded?
The slimmest here stick out 2.3 inches (VIVO) and 2–2.75 inches (UPLIFT Floating Desk). Units with storage are deeper: 7.71 inches for Floativa and 11 3/4 inches for IKEA IVAR.
What height should I mount a wall desk?
Most fixed desks are about 29 inches tall, and IKEA’s IVAR table is 29 1/2 inches. The right height depends on you and your chair, so sit at a desk you like and measure it before you drill.
Did you test these desks?
No. We compared manufacturers’ published dimensions, load ratings, mounting requirements and prices. See How We Research for details.
