The Best Monitor Arms for Small Desks (2026)

On a small desk, the monitor stand is often the biggest thing on it. A typical stand has a base that sits right where your keyboard wants to be, and on a 20- or 24-inch-deep desk there's little room to push the screen back. A monitor arm clamps to the edge of the desk (or to the wall) and holds the screen in the air. The space under the screen is freed up, and you can move the screen closer or further away than the desk's depth alone would allow.
We compared six arms and mounts on the numbers that matter for small desks: how far they reach, what screen weights they support, how thick a desk they clamp to, and price. Five are from VIVO, which makes a wide range of inexpensive mounts. One is the Ergotron LX, a long-standing premium option. As with all our guides, we haven't tested these hands-on. The specs come from the manufacturers' pages and spec sheets, linked below.
TL;DR: Our top picks

Size and fit, drawn to scale
How to choose a monitor arm for a small desk
Monitor arms have more compatibility checks than most desk gear. Go through these five before ordering. Most returns happen because one was skipped.
1. Check your monitor's VESA pattern
Look at the back of your monitor for four screw holes in a square. Every arm in this guide supports VESA 75 x 75 mm and 100 x 100 mm, the most common patterns on monitors up to about 32 inches. If your monitor has no holes, you'll need an adapter bracket, and some monitors with curved backs need spacers.
2. Weigh the monitor without its stand
Arms have a weight range, not just a maximum. Gas-spring arms in particular need enough weight to balance against. A light screen on a strong spring can drift upward, and a heavy screen on a weak spring can sag. Find "weight without stand" on your monitor's spec sheet and make sure it falls comfortably inside the arm's range. The ranges here run from 4.4–14.3 lbs (VIVO STAND-V101O) to 7–25 lbs (Ergotron LX).
3. Measure your desk's thickness and edge
Clamp mounts grip the desk edge and need a specific thickness range. VIVO's STAND-V001Q accepts 0.5–3 inches, for example. Also check underneath: a frame rail, drawer or apron can block the clamp. If the desk sits flush against a wall, make sure there's a gap behind it for the clamp, or mount on a side edge instead. Grommet mounts go through a hole in the desk and need one already drilled (or one you're willing to drill).
4. Match reach to your desk depth
On a shallow desk, the goal is often to push the screen back, toward or even past the back edge, to gain viewing distance. That's why maximum extension matters. The arms here range from 16 inches (VIVO STAND-V001) to 23.5 inches (STAND-V001Q) and up to 25 inches (Ergotron LX). On a 20–24-inch desk, more reach also lets you swing the screen aside when you need the surface for something else.
5. Standing desk or wall? Plan for movement
On a sit-stand desk, the arm moves with the desk, so you only need to leave enough cable slack for the full height range. A wall mount is fixed to the wall, so it only suits fixed-height desks, or setups where you adjust the arm itself. Wall mounting means drilling into studs or using appropriate anchors. Renters should check their lease first.
The picks, in detail
VIVO Pneumatic Single Monitor Arm, 13"-32" (STAND-V001Q)
Who it's for: Most people with a single 22- to 32-inch monitor on a small or shallow desk.
VIVO's STAND-V001Q is a gas-spring (pneumatic) arm, so you can move the screen up and down by hand without tools. VIVO lists support for 13- to 32-inch screens weighing 2.2 to 20 lbs, the widest weight range of the VIVO single arms we compared. That makes it a safer bet if you're not sure exactly how much your monitor weighs, or if you might swap monitors later.
The spec that makes it our top pick for small desks is reach. VIVO lists a maximum extension of 23.5 inches and a height adjustment range of 6.5 to 20 inches. It clamps to desks 0.5 to 3 inches thick or mounts through a grommet. At $69.99 on the day we checked, it costs twice as much as the budget pick, but you get tool-free adjustment and much more reach.
Pros
- Wide 2.2–20 lb weight range
- 23.5" maximum extension
- Tool-free gas-spring height adjustment
- Clamp or grommet mount
Cons
- Twice the price of the budget pick
- Single monitor only

Who it's for: People who will set the screen position once and leave it, and want the cheapest way to free up desk space.
At $34.99, VIVO's STAND-V001 is the cheapest mount here. It's a pole mount: a 17-inch pole clamped to the desk, with an arm that VIVO lists as extending up to 16 inches and holding screens up to 22 lbs. It fits most 13- to 32-inch screens and ultrawides up to 38 inches. It clamps to desks up to 3.25 inches thick, and the bracket tilts, swivels and rotates for portrait mode.
VIVO doesn't describe a gas spring on this model. Pole mounts like this suit set-and-forget setups better than frequent repositioning. Its 16-inch reach is also the shortest here, so it won't push a screen as far back on a shallow desk. If you'll rarely touch the screen, it frees up the same desk space as an arm costing twice as much.
Pros
- Lowest price here ($34.99)
- Up to 22 lbs, and ultrawides up to 38"
- Clamps to desks up to 3.25" thick
Cons
- Shortest reach here (16")
- Not a gas-spring arm, so better for set-and-forget

Who it's for: People with a lighter 17- to 27-inch monitor who want a gas-spring arm for less.
The STAND-V101O is VIVO's cheaper gas-spring arm at $49.99. VIVO lists it for 17- to 27-inch screens weighing 4.4 to 14.3 lbs, with an 18.5-inch maximum extension and a 6–16.5-inch height range (measured at the center of the screen). It clamps to desks 0.4 to 3.2 inches thick or mounts through a grommet.
The narrower weight range is the thing to check. Many 24-inch monitors and some 27-inch ones fall inside it, but heavier 27-inch or curved models may not. Look up "weight without stand" for your monitor. If it's over about 13 lbs, step up to the STAND-V001Q.
Pros
- Gas-spring arm for $49.99
- Clamp or grommet mount
- Compact 3.75" x 4" base
Cons
- Narrower 4.4–14.3 lb weight range
- Screens up to 27" only
- Less reach than the STAND-V001Q

Who it's for: Two-monitor setups on a desk around 40 inches wide or more.
VIVO's STAND-V002O holds two 17- to 32-inch screens on mechanical spring arms, each rated for 4.4 to 19.8 lbs, for $49.99. VIVO lists a 33-inch total arm span, a 19.75-inch maximum extension and a 6.25–16-inch height range. It clamps to desks 0.4 to 3.1 inches thick, or mounts through a grommet hole 0.4 to 1.9 inches thick.
Two monitors on a small desk is a squeeze. The 33-inch span means two side-by-side screens will usually extend past the edges of a narrow desk, which is fine as long as nothing is in the way. Mounting in the center of the back edge, with screens angled in, keeps the setup compact.
Pros
- Holds two screens for $49.99
- 4.4–19.8 lbs per arm
- Clamp or grommet
Cons
- 33" span can overhang narrow desks
- Grommet mount limited to 1.9" desk thickness

Who it's for: Fixed-height desks pushed against a wall, wall-mounted desks, or desks too thin or shallow for a clamp.
A wall mount takes the monitor off the desk entirely. VIVO's MOUNT-V001A is a gas-spring arm on a 6.75" x 1.5" wall plate, for 17- to 32-inch screens weighing 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. VIVO lists 8.75 to 11.5 inches of arm extension and a 3–14.75-inch height range. Mounting hardware, including anchors, is included. It cost $39.99 when we checked.
This suits fold-out desks like IKEA's BILLY with foldable table and pull-out desks like LÄNGDHOPP from our small desks guide, where there's no good place to clamp. Wall mounts can't follow a standing desk up and down, so they're for fixed desks. And you'll be drilling into the wall.
Pros
- Takes up zero desk space
- Gas-spring height adjustment
- Works with fold-out and pull-out desks
Cons
- Requires drilling into the wall
- Doesn’t move with a standing desk
- Short reach (up to 11.5")

Will a monitor arm work on a small desk?
Yes. Small desks are where arms help most, because they remove the stand’s base and let you push the screen back. Check that the clamp fits your desk’s thickness and that there’s clearance behind or under the edge.
How much does my monitor weigh without its stand?
Check the manufacturer’s spec sheet for “weight without stand.” Then make sure that number falls within the arm’s range, not just under its maximum.
Can I use a monitor arm on a standing desk?
Yes, clamp and grommet mounts move with the desk. Leave enough cable slack for the full height range. Wall mounts don’t move with the desk, so they suit fixed-height desks.
Do monitor arms damage desks?
Clamps put pressure on a small area of the desk edge. Thin, hollow-core or particle-board tops can be marked or crushed if over-tightened. Follow the arm’s instructions, and consider a reinforcement plate for lightweight tops.
Did you test these monitor arms?
No. We compared manufacturer specs and spec sheets. See How We Research.
About this guide
We compared single, dual and wall-mounted arms sold to US buyers, focusing on specs that matter on shallow desks: reach, weight range, clamp range and price. VIVO specs and prices come from vivo-us.com product pages. Ergotron's figures come from its LX spec sheet (PDF). All were retrieved on Oct. 9, 2026, and each product links to its source. We did not test these arms hands-on and don't publish star ratings.
