The Best Monitor Stands and Desk Shelves for Small Desks (2026)

A monitor stand is the simplest way to raise a screen on a small desk. It needs no clamp, no drilling and no VESA holes, and the space underneath it is useful: a keyboard can slide under when you need the desk, and small things can live there instead of on the desktop. Clamp-on desk shelves do the same job from the back edge of the desk and can carry speakers, books or a second screen.
On a small desk, a riser's width and depth decide whether it fits at all, and its height decides how much it helps. We compared eight risers and shelves from IKEA, VIVO and UPLIFT on those numbers. We didn't test them hands-on. Every figure comes from the maker's product page or spec sheet, linked below each pick. If you'd rather have a screen that moves, see our monitor arms guide.
TL;DR: Our top picks
- Best overall: IKEA ELLOVEN Monitor Stand with Drawer ($29.99). An 18 1/2" riser with a full-width drawer, rated 44 lbs, for $29.99.

Size and fit, drawn to scale
How to choose a monitor stand for a small desk
1. Measure your monitor's base, not just the screen
The riser's top has to be wider and deeper than the monitor's foot. Small risers like VIVO's 12" x 8" STAND-V000S suit a monitor with a compact base. Monitors with wide V-shaped feet need a longer riser such as the 18 1/2-inch ELLOVEN, the 23.8-inch VIVO STAND-V000D or the 38 1/4-inch LÅNESPELARE.
2. Check the depth against your desk
The risers and shelves here take 7.5 to 10.3 inches of desk depth (Figure 2). On a 20- or 24-inch-deep desk, that plus a keyboard and some room for your wrists fills most of the desk, so the shallow IKEA LÅNESPELARE (7 1/2 inches) and the clamp-on UPLIFT shelf (8.6 inches) leave the most room in front. Clamp-on shelves also sit at the very back edge: UPLIFT says its shelf's back edge is flush with the rear of the desk.
3. Pick a height
Most risers here lift the monitor about 4 to 5 1/2 inches (Figure 1). The VIVO STAND-V000S adjusts from 4.5 to 6.5 inches, and VIVO's DESK-SHELF15B sits 2.5 to 4.2 inches above the desk when clamped. The goal is usually to get the top of the screen near eye level, which depends on your height, chair and monitor, so a riser can't do it alone if your monitor's own stand is very low or very high. If you need more height than a riser gives, a monitor arm adjusts much further.
4. Freestanding or clamp-on?
Freestanding risers sit anywhere on the desk and move in seconds. Clamp-on shelves (VIVO STAND-SHELF24B, VIVO DESK-SHELF15B and the UPLIFT shelf) stay put and leave the desk surface under them clear, but they need the right desk thickness: up to 1.2 inches for the SHELF24B, 0.4 to 2.8 inches for the DESK-SHELF15B and 0.75 to 1.75 inches for UPLIFT's shelf. They also need a desk edge to clamp to, which rules out desks pushed into a corner on both sides.
5. Weight rating and storage
Most of these are rated 44 lbs, plenty for a typical monitor. The VIVO STAND-V000S is rated 33 lbs, UPLIFT's 27-inch shelf 50 lbs (25 lbs for its 15-inch shelf), and IKEA doesn't list a rating for SIGFINN, only that it holds monitors up to 19 inches. For storage, the ELLOVEN's drawer is the only enclosed space here; the others leave an open gap underneath.
The picks, in detail
IKEA ELLOVEN Monitor Stand with Drawer
Who it's for: Most people with one monitor on a small desk who want the screen higher and somewhere to put small things.
IKEA's ELLOVEN is a steel riser with a bamboo and fiberboard drawer underneath. It's 18 1/2 inches wide, 10 1/4 inches deep and 4 inches high, and IKEA rates it at 44 lbs. The drawer is 17 3/4" x 9 1/2" inside, and a small opening at the back lets you run cables through. It was $29.99.
The height is fixed at 4 inches, and at 10 1/4 inches deep it's one of the deeper risers here.

Who it's for: People with a monitor up to 19 inches who want a plain wooden riser.
IKEA's SIGFINN is a molded-wood riser 20 3/4 inches wide, 9 1/2 inches deep and 4 inches high, with a small storage space underneath for things like pens and notepads. IKEA says it holds monitors up to 19 inches and doesn't list a weight rating. It was $29.99.
The 19-inch limit rules out most current desktop monitors, which are usually 24 inches or larger. For a bigger screen, the ELLOVEN costs the same and is rated 44 lbs.

Who it's for: People with a shallow desk, or who want one long riser under a monitor and other gear.
IKEA's LÅNESPELARE monitor stand is a steel riser 38 1/4 inches wide, only 7 1/2 inches deep and 5 1/2 inches high, rated at 44 lbs. IKEA says it creates space underneath for gear you want close at hand. It was $29.99.
It's the shallowest riser here, so it leaves the most room in front on a 20-inch desk. At 38 1/4 inches it's also the widest, so check that your desk has that much clear width at the back.

Who it's for: People with a compact monitor base who want to fine-tune the height.
VIVO's STAND-V000S is a steel and aluminum riser with a 12" x 8" padded top on a 9" x 7" base. VIVO says the whole platform adjusts from 4.5 to 6.5 inches above the desk, and it's rated at 33 lbs. It was $34.99.
The small top is the trade-off: it suits monitors with a compact round or square foot, not wide V-shaped feet. It's the only riser here with adjustable height.

- Small 12" x 8" top

The 24-inch version was $34.99 in black, white or light wood, with 39-inch ($49.99) and 55-inch ($59.99) versions.

Who it's for: People who need a little more surface than their small desk has, or a shelf they can move around.
VIVO's DESK-SHELF15B is a 15" x 9.8" shelf with three setups. It can clamp on facing inward as a raised shelf over the desk, clamp on facing outward to extend the desktop past its edge, or stand alone on its own feet at 6.5 inches. Clamped, it sits 2.5 to 4.2 inches above the desk and fits desktops 0.4 to 2.8 inches thick. VIVO rates it at 44 lbs. The clamp feet need 5.2 inches of clear space under the desk. It was $39.99, with a 21.7-inch version (DESK-SHELF22B) for $49.99.
VIVO markets it for game consoles and gear as well as monitors. At 15 inches wide it suits a small monitor, a laptop or speakers rather than a wide screen.

Who it's for: People who want a sturdy shelf across the back of the desk for a monitor, speakers or books, especially against a wall.
UPLIFT's Desk Shelf or Monitor Stand is a steel shelf that clamps to desktops 0.75 to 1.75 inches thick, with no drilling. UPLIFT says its back edge sits flush with the rear of the desk, so it works with the desk against a wall. The 27-inch shelf is 27.4 inches wide and 8.6 inches deep, sits 4 inches above the desktop and is rated at 50 lbs. A neoprene pad is included. It was $99 for one 27-inch shelf, or $79 for the 15-inch shelf (rated 25 lbs). It has UPLIFT's 15-year warranty.
It costs the most here. For a single monitor on a freestanding riser, the IKEA and VIVO options cost much less.

Is a monitor stand or a monitor arm better for a small desk?
A stand is cheaper and needs no clamp or VESA holes, and the space underneath is useful. An arm adjusts much further and frees the whole desk surface. See our monitor arms guide.
How high should a monitor riser be?
High enough to bring the top of the screen near eye level. Most risers here add about 4 to 5 1/2 inches; the VIVO STAND-V000S adjusts from 4.5 to 6.5 inches.
Can I put my keyboard under a monitor stand?
Often, if the gap is tall and wide enough. Check the riser’s height and clear width against your keyboard.
Will a clamp-on desk shelf fit my desk?
Check your desktop’s thickness: up to 1.2" for the VIVO STAND-SHELF24B, 0.4"–2.8" for the VIVO DESK-SHELF15B and 0.75"–1.75" for the UPLIFT shelf. You also need a free edge to clamp to.
Did you test these stands?
