The Best Desks for Small Spaces (2026)

A "small desk" can mean very different things. It might be a 28-inch writing desk that tucks under a window, a pull-out desk that's only 15 inches deep when closed, a bookcase with a table that folds away after work, or a corner unit that uses the one bit of floor nobody else wants. The best choice depends less on the desk than on the shape of your space and how often the desk has to disappear.
We compared six desks in those formats using the measurements and load ratings each manufacturer publishes. Five are from IKEA, because IKEA simply makes more small-format desks than anyone else selling to US shoppers, and one is a compact standing desk from VIVO for people who want height adjustment too. We didn't test these hands-on. Every number below comes from the maker's own product page, with links so you can check.
TL;DR: Our top picks
- Best overall small desk: IKEA MICKE Desk, 28 3/4" x 19 5/8" ($69.99). Only 28 3/4" x 19 5/8", with a drawer, a 110 lb load rating and hidden cable routing, for $69.99.
- Best for shallow spaces: IKEA LÄNGDHOPP Pull-out Desk ($119.99). Only 15 3/8" deep closed, pulling out to 28" when you work.
- Best for shared rooms: IKEA BILLY Bookcase with Foldable Table ($180). A bookcase with a table that folds down to 12 3/4" deep.
- Best corner desk: IKEA MICKE Corner Workstation ($299.99). Puts shelves and the desk into one 39 3/8" square corner footprint.
- Best small desk that also stands: VIVO 1B Series Electric Standing Desk, 43" x 24" ($169.99). A 43" x 24" electric sit-stand desk for $169.99.

Size and fit, drawn to scale
How to choose a desk for a small space
Start with the depth you can spare
In small rooms, depth is usually tighter than width, because the desk sticks out into the walkway. Measure from the wall to where you need clear floor (a bed, a door swing, a walkway), then subtract the space your chair needs behind you. The desks in this guide range from 12 3/4 inches deep (BILLY folded) through 15 3/8 (LÄNGDHOPP closed) and 19 5/8 (MICKE) up to 23 5/8–24 inches (LINNMON, VIVO).
Shallow desks work well for laptops. If you use an external monitor on a desk under about 20 inches deep, plan on a monitor arm or wall mount so the screen isn't right in front of your nose.
Then decide how often the desk needs to disappear
- Always out: a fixed compact desk (MICKE, LINNMON/ADILS) is cheapest and simplest.
- Out during the day, away at night: a pull-out (LÄNGDHOPP) or fold-out (BILLY with foldable table) shrinks back when you're done.
- Only the corner is free: a corner workstation (MICKE corner) uses space that's otherwise wasted.
Check knee clearance and height
Fixed desks in this guide are around 29–29 1/2 inches tall. That's a typical desk height, but what matters for comfort is the space underneath. IKEA lists 24 3/4 inches under the MICKE (because of its drawer) and 28 inches under the LÄNGDHOPP. If you're tall or you plan to use a thick chair cushion, measure from the floor to the top of your thighs while seated and compare. If a fixed height doesn't suit you, a compact sit-stand desk like the VIVO 1B lets you pick your own height.
Load ratings matter more on fold-outs
Fixed desks are usually rated for plenty of weight. IKEA lists 110 lbs for the MICKE. Fold-out and pull-out designs are different. IKEA lists the BILLY fold-out's shelves at 40 lbs each and doesn't publish a separate figure for the fold-down table, so we'd use it for a laptop, not a heavy monitor.
Look at the whole footprint
Drawers, legs and shelves change how a desk fits. The MICKE corner workstation is 55 7/8 inches tall, so check it clears a window sill or sloped ceiling. The LINNMON/ADILS uses four separate legs, which leaves the space underneath open for a drawer unit or a bin.
The picks, in detail
IKEA MICKE Desk, 28 3/4" x 19 5/8"
Who it's for: Laptop users and students who need a proper desk in a bedroom, entryway or the gap beside a bed.
The smallest MICKE is 28 3/4 inches wide and 19 5/8 inches deep, which fits almost anywhere. Unlike many tiny desks, it still has a drawer (24 3/8" x 14 1/8" inside), and IKEA lists a 110 lb maximum load. IKEA also notes a design detail at the back that hides cables, which helps when the desk sits in a visible spot in a living room.
At $69.99 on the day we checked, it's an easy recommendation if you mainly work on a laptop. The limits are the ones you'd expect: there isn't room for a laptop plus a monitor plus a notebook, and the drawer cuts knee clearance to 24 3/4 inches under the desk. Taller people should measure that. The MICKE series also comes in wider sizes if you have more space.
Pros
- Very small at 28 3/4" x 19 5/8"
- Drawer and cable concealment
- 110 lb load rating
- Low price
Cons
- Tight for a monitor setup
- 24 3/4" knee clearance under the drawer

Check price at IKEA (opens in a new tab)IKEA LINNMON / ADILS Table, 39 3/8" x 23 5/8"
Who it's for: Anyone who wants the most surface for the least money and doesn’t need storage.
The LINNMON tabletop on ADILS legs is the simplest desk here: a 39 3/8" x 23 5/8" top on four legs, 29 1/8 inches tall, for $49.99. That's 10 inches wider and 4 inches deeper than the MICKE for less money, enough room for a laptop and a monitor.
There's no drawer, and IKEA's product page doesn't list a load rating for this combination, so we can't compare its strength with the others. It's a reliable no-frills option if you mainly need surface area. The open space underneath also makes it easy to slide in a drawer unit or storage bins.
Pros
- Lowest price here ($49.99)
- More surface than the MICKE
- Open underneath for storage
Cons
- No storage
- No published load rating

Who it's for: People in narrow hallways, nooks or rooms where a desk can only stick out from the wall about 15 inches most of the time.
LÄNGDHOPP is a pull-out desk. Closed, IKEA lists it at 35 3/8 inches wide and only 15 3/8 inches deep. Pull it out and the work surface grows to 28 inches deep, which is more than any other desk in this guide. It has a large drawer (31 7/8" x 13" inside, rated to 44 lbs), and IKEA lists 110 lbs per shelf.
The height is fixed at 29 1/2 inches with 28 inches under the desk, which is the most generous knee clearance among the fixed desks here. At $119.99 it costs more than the basic desks, but nothing else here gives you a 28-inch-deep work surface that shrinks to 15 inches.
Pros
- Only 15 3/8" deep closed
- Pulls out to a 28" deep work surface
- Big drawer rated to 44 lbs
- 28" knee clearance
Cons
- You have to clear the extension before closing it
- Costs more than fixed compact desks

Check price at IKEA (opens in a new tab)IKEA BILLY Bookcase with Foldable Table
Who it's for: People whose desk has to live in a living room or bedroom and mostly look like a bookcase.
This BILLY variant is a 31 1/2-inch-wide bookcase with a table that folds out. Folded, IKEA lists it at 12 3/4 inches deep, the slimmest footprint in this guide. Unfolded, it reaches 44 1/4 inches deep with the table at 29 1/4 inches high, a normal desk height. It's 41 3/4 inches tall, so it can sit under a window.
The trade-off is load. IKEA lists 40 lbs per shelf and doesn't give a separate rating for the table itself, so we'd treat it as a laptop and notebook desk, not a home for a heavy monitor. At $180, you're paying for the dual purpose. If your room can take a permanent desk, the MICKE or LÄNGDHOPP is the better workspace.
Pros
- Only 12 3/4" deep when folded
- Doubles as a bookcase
- Normal 29 1/4" table height
Cons
- No published load rating for the table
- Better for laptops than monitors
- More expensive than a basic desk

Who it's for: People with an empty corner who want desk, shelves and drawer storage in one footprint.
The MICKE corner workstation is 39 3/8 inches on each side and 55 7/8 inches tall. It puts a desk, adjustable shelves, a cable outlet and a magnetic board into the corner, according to IKEA. The desk surface is rated at 110 lbs. The shelves are rated far lower (7 lbs per shelf and 2 lbs per drawer), so they're for supplies, not books by the armful.
At $299.99 it's the most expensive IKEA piece here. It earns its place when a corner is the only free space and you'd otherwise buy a separate shelf unit. Check the 55 7/8-inch height against window sills and sloped ceilings, and remember a corner desk puts your back to the room.
Pros
- Uses otherwise dead corner space
- Storage built in
- 110 lb desk load rating
Cons
- Low shelf and drawer ratings
- Tall at 55 7/8"
- Most expensive IKEA option here

Who it's for: People who want one compact desk that can be used sitting or standing.
If you'd like height adjustment, VIVO's 1B Series in the 43" x 24" size is the smallest electric sit-stand desk we found that doesn't cost much more than a fixed desk. VIVO lists the top at 43.3" x 23.6", a 29.2"–48.4" height range, a 220 lb weight rating and four memory presets, for $169.99 in black.
Its footprint is similar to the LINNMON/ADILS, but the frame has two long feet (23.5 inches each, per VIVO) rather than four corner legs. It needs a power outlet, and like all budget frames it's a single motor. For a full comparison with other compact sit-stand desks, see our best small standing desks guide.

- Wide 29.2"–48.4" height range

What size desk is best for a small room?
For laptop-only work, around 28–36 inches wide and 18–20 inches deep is enough. The IKEA MICKE is 28 3/4" x 19 5/8". For a laptop plus a monitor, look for about 39–43 inches wide.
What is the minimum depth for a desk?
Laptop work is possible on 15–20 inch deep surfaces. With an external monitor, a deeper surface or a monitor arm that pushes the screen back helps keep a comfortable distance.
Are fold-out desks sturdy enough?
They’re usually rated for less than fixed desks. IKEA lists the BILLY fold-out’s shelves at 40 lbs each and publishes no separate table rating, so we’d use fold-outs for a laptop rather than heavy equipment.
Is a corner desk better for a small room?
Only if the corner would otherwise go unused. A corner desk like the MICKE corner workstation (39 3/8" on each side) puts storage and a desk in one footprint, but it faces the wall.
Did you test these desks?
No. We compared manufacturers’ published dimensions, load ratings and prices. See How We Research for details.
