If you already have a small desk you like, or a rental desk you can't replace, a standing desk converter is the cheapest way to work standing up. It sits on top of the desk and lifts your laptop or monitor to standing height, then lowers it again when you sit.
On a small desk, though, a converter has to share the surface with everything else. Some are barely deeper than a laptop; others take up nearly a whole 30-inch-deep desk. We compared six converters from VIVO and UPLIFT on the numbers that decide whether one will work on your desk: how deep it is, how high it lifts, and how much it's rated to hold. We didn't test them hands-on. Every figure comes from the maker's product page or spec sheet, linked below each pick.
TL;DR: Our top picks
- Best for laptops on small desks: UPLIFT E3 Compact Standing Desk Converter ($149). Only 13.4" deep and 1" tall when closed, lifting to 16.8" above the desk.
- Best budget: VIVO 28" Single Top Standing Desk Converter ($69.99). A 27.5" x 12" laptop riser with 8 set heights up to 14", for $69.99 on sale.
- Best single-top for a laptop and accessories: VIVO 29" Single Top Standing Desk Converter ($99.99). A bigger 29.3" x 17.8" top rated for 22 lbs, for $99.99.
- Best budget two-tier: VIVO K Series 32" Standing Desk Converter ($139.99). A 31.5" top plus a keyboard tray, rated for 33 lbs and rising 20".
- Best for taller users: UPLIFT ATX Standing Desk Converter ($319). Lifts its top to 24.6" above the desk, the highest here, but it’s 28.8" deep.

How to choose a converter for a small desk
1. Compare its depth with your desk's depth
This is the number that rules out the most converters on a small desk. Measure your desk front to back, and leave room for anything that has to stay behind the converter, like a lamp or a monitor arm's clamp. The converters here run from 12 inches deep (VIVO DESK-V011F) and 13.4 inches (UPLIFT E3 Compact) to 26.5 inches (UPLIFT Lady Bird) and 28.8 inches (UPLIFT ATX), as Figure 2 shows. The two UPLIFT two-tier models need most of a 30-inch desk. On a 20- or 24-inch desk, the single-top models are the realistic choice.
2. Work out how high it needs to lift
A converter's height range is measured from your desk, so the number you need depends on how tall your desk is. Add the converter's maximum lift to your desk's height. On a 29-inch desk, for example:
- VIVO DESK-V011F (up to 14"): 43 inches from the floor.
- UPLIFT E3 Compact (up to 16.8"): 45.8 inches.
- VIVO K Series (up to 20"): 49 inches.
- UPLIFT ATX (up to 24.6"): 53.6 inches.
For comparison, the general standing keyboard-height guidance in ANSI/BIFMA G1-2013 runs from about 38.3 to 48.7 inches, as summarised by UW Facilities. Your own best height depends on your body and shoes. For a two-tier converter, the keyboard tray sits below the top, so the keyboard ends up lower than these numbers. UPLIFT gives user-height ranges for its two-tier models: 4' 10" to 6' 1" for the Lady Bird and 4' 10" to 6' 2" for the ATX.
3. Single top or two tiers?
A single-top converter (VIVO DESK-V011F and DESK-V000U, UPLIFT E3 Compact) lifts one flat surface. That works well for a laptop, but the keyboard and screen end up at the same height. With a two-tier converter (VIVO K Series, UPLIFT Lady Bird and ATX), the keyboard tray sits below the top, so the screen can sit higher than your hands. Two tiers usually mean more depth and more weight, though.
4. Match the weight rating to your gear
Ratings here range from 11 lbs (VIVO DESK-V011F, UPLIFT E3 Compact) to 33 lbs (VIVO K Series, UPLIFT ATX top surface). A laptop is easy for any of them. A monitor on its own stand plus a laptop adds up quickly, so check your monitor's weight. If you want more room on top, a monitor arm can hold the screen. UPLIFT says both of its two-tier models accept one.
Converter or a small standing desk?
A converter keeps your existing desk and costs less than most standing desks. But it adds a second surface on top of the first, and none of these goes lower than your desk for sitting. If you're replacing the desk anyway, a compact sit-stand desk can take less space overall. See our small standing desks guide; the smallest electric desk there is 36" x 22". If you only work on a laptop, a tabletop stand like IKEA's DUBBLA ($59.99) in our laptop stands guide is another option.
The picks, in detail
UPLIFT E3 Compact Standing Desk Converter
Who it's for: Laptop users with a shallow desk, or anyone who wants a converter they can put away or carry to another table.
UPLIFT's E3 Compact is a single 26.8" x 13.4" platform on a gas spring. UPLIFT says it's 1 inch tall when closed, lifts to 16.8 inches above the desk, weighs 12.4 lb and needs no assembly. At 13.4 inches deep, it leaves most of a 20- or 24-inch desk free in front of it.
The limit is weight. UPLIFT rates it for 11 lb and describes it as ideal for laptops, so it's not meant for a monitor on a stand. There's no keyboard tray, so your keyboard and screen sit at the same height unless you use a separate keyboard. It was $149 on UPLIFT's site and carries UPLIFT's 15-year warranty.
Pros
- 13.4" deep, 1" tall when closed
- Lifts to 16.8" above the desk
- No assembly; easy to store
- 15-year warranty
Cons
- 11 lb rating: laptops only
- No keyboard tray

Who it's for: Laptop users on a tight budget who want to try standing without giving up much desk space.
VIVO's DESK-V011F has a 27.5" x 12" top, the shallowest here, on a base VIVO lists at 14 to 20 inches by 10.2 inches. It stops at eight set heights from 2 to 14 inches above the desk. VIVO says it arrives pre-assembled and weighs 9.7 lbs. It was $69.99 on sale on VIVO's site (regular price listed as $79.99).
Like the UPLIFT E3 Compact, it's rated for 11 lbs and has a single top, so it suits a laptop rather than a monitor. Its 14-inch maximum is the lowest here. On a 29-inch desk that's 43 inches from the floor, which may be too low for taller users. Check it against your own measurement first.
Pros
- Lowest price here ($69.99 on sale)
- Shallowest top (12")
- Pre-assembled
- 8 set heights
Cons
- 11 lb rating
- 14" maximum lift is the lowest here
- Fixed steps rather than any height

Who it's for: People who want room for a laptop plus a mouse, a notebook or a small second screen on one platform.
The DESK-V000U is VIVO's larger single-top converter: a 29.3" x 17.8" platform on a 26.1" x 14.8" base, adjusting from 1.8 to 16.2 inches above the desk. VIVO rates it for 22 lbs, twice the UPLIFT E3 Compact and VIVO DESK-V011F, and says it arrives pre-assembled. It was $99.99 for the black 29-inch version.
At 17.8 inches deep it still fits a 20-inch desk, but it doesn't leave much in front of it. There's no keyboard tray. VIVO also sells a 36-inch-wide version (DESK-V036U) for $119.99, with a slightly lower 16.1-inch maximum.
Pros
- 22 lb rating

Check price at VIVO (opens in a new tab)VIVO K Series 32" Standing Desk Converter
Who it's for: People using a monitor and separate keyboard who want the screen higher than their hands, on a budget.
The K Series is a two-tier converter: a top surface for a monitor or laptop, with a removable keyboard tray below it. The 32-inch version has a 31.5" x 15.7" top, lifts from 4.5 to 20 inches above the desk on a single pneumatic spring, and is rated for 33 lbs on top and 4 lbs on the keyboard tray. It was $139.99 for black 32-inch (regular price listed as $149.99), and VIVO sells sizes from 26 to 48 inches starting at $119.99.
Its 20-inch maximum lift is the second-highest here. What VIVO doesn't list is the size of the keyboard tray or the converter's overall depth with the tray, so we couldn't draw it in Figure 2. For comparison, UPLIFT's two two-tier models are 6.8 and 8 inches deeper overall than their tops, so don't assume the K Series fits a shallow desk just because its top is 15.7 inches deep. Ask VIVO or check the assembly manual linked on its product page first.
Pros
- Two tiers for monitor and keyboard
- 33 lb top rating
- Lifts to 20" above the desk
- Six widths from 26" to 48"
Cons
- Overall depth and tray size not listed
- Keyboard tray rated for 4 lbs

Who it's for: People with a 30-inch-deep desk who want a two-tier converter with a long warranty.
The Lady Bird is UPLIFT's lower-priced two-tier converter. UPLIFT's spec sheet lists it at 29.7 inches wide and 26.5 inches deep overall, with a 19.7-inch-deep top and a 29.7" x 12.4" keyboard tray, adjusting from 4.9 to 16.9 inches above the desk. It's rated for 28.6 lb on top and 4.4 lb on the keyboard tray. UPLIFT says it suits users from 4' 10" to 6' 1" and meets ANSI/BIFMA X5.5. It was $199 on UPLIFT's site.
The 26.5-inch depth is the problem on a small desk: it takes up nearly all of a 24-inch desk and most of a 30-inch one. It's here mainly as a comparison with the VIVO K Series, which lifts higher and has a higher top rating for less money but doesn't publish its overall depth.
Pros
- Two tiers with a full-width keyboard tray
- Overall depth published (26.5")
- 15-year warranty
Cons
- 26.5" deep: too deep for most small desks
- 16.9" maximum lift
- Costs more than the VIVO K Series

Who it's for: Taller users whose desk is at least 30 inches deep and who need more lift than the other converters offer.
The ATX lifts its top from 6.3 to 24.6 inches above the desk. That's 18.3 inches of travel and the highest maximum here. UPLIFT says it suits users from 4' 10" to 6' 2". Its gas spring has adjustable tension, so you can tune it to the weight you put on it. UPLIFT rates it for 33 lb on top and 6.6 lb on the keyboard tray, and says it arrives fully assembled.
It's also the biggest converter here: 35.4 inches wide and 28.8 inches deep overall, with 35" x 24.8" feet, according to UPLIFT's spec sheet. That's nearly a whole 30-inch desk. At $319 on UPLIFT's site it's the priciest here too. It makes sense if height is your main problem and depth isn't.
Pros
- Highest lift here (24.6" above the desk)
- Adjustable spring tension
- 33 lb top rating
- Arrives assembled; 15-year warranty
Cons
- 28.8" deep overall: needs a large desk
- Highest price here ($319)
- Widest here (35.4")

Will a standing desk converter fit on a 24-inch-deep desk?
A single-top converter will. The VIVO DESK-V011F is 12" deep, the UPLIFT E3 Compact 13.4" and the VIVO DESK-V000U 17.8". The UPLIFT Lady Bird (26.5") and ATX (28.8") are deeper than a 24-inch desk.
How much weight can a desk converter hold?
The ratings in this guide run from 11 lbs (VIVO DESK-V011F, UPLIFT E3 Compact) to 33 lbs on the top surface (VIVO K Series, UPLIFT ATX). Keyboard trays are rated separately, at 4 to 6.6 lbs.
How high does a standing desk converter need to go?
Add the converter’s maximum lift to your desk height, then compare that with your standing elbow height. On a 29-inch desk, the converters here reach 43" (VIVO DESK-V011F) to 53.6" (UPLIFT ATX) from the floor.
Is a converter better than a small standing desk?
It’s cheaper and keeps your desk, but it stacks a second surface on top. If you’re replacing the desk anyway, see our small standing desks guide.
Did you test these converters?
No. This guide compares manufacturer specifications and published prices. See How We Research.
About this guide
We looked for sit-stand converters sold to US buyers by established makers, favoring models shallow enough for 20- to 24-inch-deep desks, with two deeper two-tier models for comparison. All dimensions, height ranges, weight ratings and prices come from the manufacturers' product pages and spec sheets, retrieved on Oct. 10, 2026. Each product links to its source. We didn't test these converters hands-on and don't publish star ratings.
