Under-Desk Storage Ideas for Small Spaces: Carts, Drawers, Shelves and Hooks

In a small home office, the space under the desk is often the biggest empty storage space in the room. It's also the easiest to waste. A pile of boxes, a PC tower on the carpet and a basket of cables push your legs to one side, and on a standing desk anything on the floor has to clear the frame every time the desk goes up and down. Storage works best planned alongside the desk and chair, as we cover in how to set up a small home office.
Good under-desk storage works around your legs instead of competing with them. There are three places to use: the floor at the sides and back of the desk, the underside of the desktop, and the desk legs and edges. This guide covers how to measure each one, nine under-desk storage ideas that fit compact desks, and seven products for them: a rolling drawer cart, a low printer stand, two kinds of slide-out drawer, a clamp-on shelf, a PC mount and a headphone hook. As with all our guides, we haven't tested these hands-on. The specs come from each maker's product page or Amazon listing, checked on Oct. 19, 2026 and linked below.
TL;DR: Our top picks
- Best rolling drawer cart: IRIS USA 4-Drawer Rolling Storage Cart with Organizer Top (Check current price). Four drawers and a divided top in a cart only 12.1 inches wide, so it fits beside your knees or under a desk with 27 inches of clearance.

- Best slide-out drawer: Mount-It! Large Under Desk Pencil Drawer (MI-7148) (Check current price). A 21.25-inch-wide drawer on ball-bearing slides that screws under the desktop, adding a pencil drawer to a desk that has none.
- Best no-drill drawers: Bostitch Konnect Under Desk Drawer, 2-Pack (Check current price). Two small stick-on drawers with dividers for pens, cables and chargers; no screws, so they suit renters.
- Best hanging shelf: VIVO Above/Below Clamp-on 13" Dual Shelf (STAND-SHELF2C) (Check current price). Two 12.6 x 7.1-inch shelves that clamp to the desk edge and hang below it, moving with a standing desk.

Measure the space under your desk first
Under-desk storage fails for the same few reasons: it's too tall to slide under, it blocks your knees, or it can't attach to the desk you have. Five measurements prevent all three. Write them down before you buy anything.
- Clear height. Measure from the floor to the lowest thing under the desktop: the frame, an apron, a crossbar, a drawer or a keyboard tray. A desk that's 29 inches tall at the top may have only 25 or 26 inches of clear space underneath. Leave about half an inch so anything on casters rolls in without scraping.
- Clear width between the legs. Measure from leg to leg, or between the frame's feet. This is the total space you're sharing between your legs and your storage.
- Depth. Measure from the front edge to the wall or the back of the desk. A 24-inch-deep desk usually leaves room for a cart or stand behind your feet; a 20-inch desk leaves much less.
- Desktop thickness and material. Clamp-on products list a thickness range, screw-on drawers and mounts need enough solid wood, particle board or MDF to hold the screws, and stick-on organizers need a flat, clean underside. Glass and thin metal tops rule out most screw-on options.
- Overhang. Measure how far the desktop sticks out past the legs or frame at each side. Under-desk mounts and hooks often go in this overhang, so it limits what fits there.
Keep a knee zone
Before you plan storage, mark off the space your legs need and keep it empty. Ergonomic guidelines generally call for roughly 20 inches of clear width for your legs; more is more comfortable, especially if you cross your legs or move around. On a 40-inch desk, that leaves about 10 inches on each side, minus whatever the legs take. On a 30-inch desk, put most storage beside the desk rather than under it. Our small desks guide notes which desks leave the underside open.
Standing desks: move it with the desk, or keep it low
On a sit-stand desk, anything attached to the desktop rises and lowers with it, so drawers, clamp-on shelves, PC mounts and hooks stay within reach at both heights. Anything on the floor has to stay clear of the frame at the desk's lowest setting. Check your frame's height range in our small standing desks guide, and leave cable slack for anything mounted to the desk; our cable management guide covers how much.
9 under-desk storage ideas for small spaces
These are grouped by where they go: the floor first, then the underside of the desk, then the legs and edges. Most small desks can use one idea from each group without crowding your knees.
On the floor
- A rolling drawer cart beside your knees. A narrow cart with drawers holds supplies, chargers and paper in a footprint about the size of a small trash can. Choose one narrow enough to sit next to your legs, and low enough to roll under the desk if you need the floor space. Our pick: the IRIS 4-drawer cart.
- A low rolling rack for a printer or bins. A short stand on casters puts a printer, a scanner or two storage bins under the desk instead of on it, and rolls out when you need it. At 13.5 inches tall, the Safco 5206 fits under almost any desk, even one with a keyboard tray.
- A small filing cabinet for paper. If most of what you're storing is paperwork, a 2- or 3-drawer filing cabinet with a file drawer is the better fit. We compared five in our small filing cabinets guide, including locking and wood-look models.
Under the desktop
- A slide-out drawer. Many compact desks have no drawer at all. An under-desk drawer screws to the underside and pulls out over your lap, like a traditional pencil drawer. The Mount-It MI-7148 is the larger option here.
- Stick-on drawers if you can't drill. Small adhesive drawers hold pens, a phone charger and earbuds without screws. The Bostitch Konnect 2-pack is our pick.
- A cable tray for the power strip. Moving the power strip and chargers off the floor and into a tray under the back edge frees more floor space than most organizers. Our under-desk cable management guide has a five-step plan and tray picks.
- A keyboard tray, if you don't need a drawer. A drawer and a keyboard tray compete for the same space under the front edge. If desk depth is the bigger problem, a keyboard tray does more for you than a drawer.
On the legs and edges
- A hanging shelf at one side. A clamp-on shelf hung below the desk edge holds a router, a hard drive, notebooks or a small speaker, and it moves with a standing desk. See the VIVO STAND-SHELF2C.
- Get the PC tower and headphones off the floor and desk. A PC mount holds the tower under the desktop at one side, and a headphone hook under the edge gives headphones a home that isn't the desk.
The picks, in detail
IRIS USA 4-Drawer Rolling Storage Cart with Organizer Top
Who it's for: Anyone who needs drawers for supplies, chargers and paper but has a desk with none, and only a narrow gap beside their knees.
IRIS USA's MC-322 cart has four plastic drawers, two shallow ones on top and two deep ones below, plus a divided organizer tray on top for pens, clips and sticky notes. IRIS lists it at 12.1 inches wide, 14.3 inches deep and 26.4 inches tall; the Amazon listing gives 12.05 x 14.25 x 26.44 inches. At about 12 inches wide, it's narrow enough to sit beside your legs under many 40-inch desks, and it rolls under a desk with at least 27 inches of clear height.
The casters are removable if you'd rather it stay in one place, and built-in drawer stops keep the drawers from falling out when you pull them all the way. IRIS doesn't list a weight rating, so treat it as a supply cart rather than a place for heavy paper stacks. We link the Black/Pearl version, with white drawers. IRIS's video shows the same cart with smoke-gray drawers. It had 4.6 stars from about 5,560 ratings on Amazon when we checked, the most of any pick here.
Pros
- Narrow: about 12" wide
- Four drawers plus a divided top
- Drawer stops; removable casters
- Most ratings of the picks here
Cons
- 26.4" tall: too tall for desks with less than 27" of clearance
- Plastic; no weight rating listed
- No lock

Who it's for: Home offices with a printer, scanner or bins that take up desk space, and desks with little clearance underneath.
Safco's 5206 is a low steel stand on casters: a 19 x 16-inch laminate top for a printer, with a steel wire shelf below for paper, toner or a couple of bins. It's 13.5 inches tall, so it slides under almost any desk, including one with a keyboard tray or a low crossbar. When you need to print, you roll it out.
Safco rates the stand at 100 pounds overall and the wire shelf at 50 pounds, and it rolls on four casters, two of which lock. It needs assembly, but Safco says no tools are required. The catch is width: at 19 inches, it takes most of the knee space under a small desk, so park it at one end or behind your feet rather than in the middle. We link the black 5206BL; a gray 5206GR also exists. The video is a Safco product video posted by an office-supply dealer. It had 4.6 stars from about 2,427 ratings on Amazon.
Pros
- Only 13.5" tall
- Holds a printer plus paper below
- 100 lb rating; two locking casters
- Tool-free assembly
Cons
- 19" wide: park it at one end, not in the knee zone
- Open wire shelf; no drawers
- Plain office look

Check price at Amazon (opens in a new tab)Mount-It! Large Under Desk Pencil Drawer (MI-7148)
Who it's for: Owners of compact desks and standing desks with no drawer, and a wood, particle board or MDF top at least an inch thick.
Mount-It's MI-7148 adds a traditional pencil drawer to a desk that doesn't have one. The drawer is 21.25 inches wide and 16.25 inches deep, divided into compartments for pens, clips and small supplies, and it runs on ball-bearing slides. It screws to the underside of the desktop, and the mounting brackets fit desk depths from 16.25 to 28 inches.
Check three things first. Mount-It says it needs 23 inches of clear width and 16.25 inches of depth under the desktop, wider than the drawer itself, so measure between the legs or frame. The desktop must be over 1 inch thick. And it sits where a keyboard tray would go, so you can't have both at the front edge. It's under 2 inches tall, but it does take that much from your thigh clearance. On a standing desk, it moves with the desktop. It had 4.3 stars from about 729 ratings on Amazon.
Pros
- Large 21.25" x 16.25" drawer
- Ball-bearing slides
- Brackets fit 16.25"–28" desk depths
- Moves with a standing desk
Cons
- Needs 23" of clear width
- Screws in; desk must be over 1" thick
- Takes the keyboard tray spot
Key specs
- Size
- Drawer 21.25" W x 16.25" D, under 2" tall
- Storage
- One shallow drawer with 4 compartments
- Load and mounting
- Screws to desks over 1" thick; needs 23" W x 16.25" D of clear space underneath
- Type
- Metal frame on ball-bearing slides; brackets fit desk depths from 16.25" to 28"
- Also
- 4.3 stars, about 729 Amazon ratings (Oct. 19, 2026)

- MI-7148 (black)

Check price at Amazon (opens in a new tab)Bostitch Konnect Under Desk Drawer, 2-Pack
Who it's for: Renters, owners of borrowed or thin desks, and anyone who wants a small drawer for pens and chargers without screws.
Bostitch's Konnect drawers are small plastic trays that slide out of a frame you stick to the underside of the desk. Each one measures 5.61 inches wide, 9.06 inches deep and 1.91 inches tall by the Amazon listing, and the 2-pack comes with four removable dividers, so you can set up compartments for pens, sticky notes, earbuds or a charging cable.
They're much smaller than a full under-desk drawer, which is the point: two of them fit in places a 21-inch drawer can't, such as either side of a crossbar or near the front corners. The adhesive needs a flat, clean underside, so they won't suit desks with ribs or a textured finish, and Bostitch doesn't publish a weight limit. Keep them for light items. The listing mentions a 3-year warranty, and they come in black or white. The black 2-pack had 4.5 stars from about 907 ratings.
Pros
- No screws or tools
- Two drawers fit around crossbars
- 4 removable dividers
- Black or white
Cons
- Small: 5.61" x 9.06" each
- Needs a flat underside
- No weight rating listed
Key specs
- Size
- Each drawer 5.61" W x 9.06" D x 1.91" H (Amazon)

- Load and mounting
- Self-adhesive; needs a flat underside; no weight rating listed

- Plastic slide-out drawers; no tools or screws
- Also

Check price at Amazon (opens in a new tab)VIVO Above/Below Clamp-on 13" Dual Shelf (STAND-SHELF2C)
Who it's for: Standing desk owners, and anyone who wants a shelf under the desk for a router, a hard drive or notebooks without anything touching the floor.
VIVO's STAND-SHELF2C is a two-shelf rack that clamps to the edge of the desktop. VIVO designed it to go either above the desk or upside down below it, so it hangs under the edge like a small bookcase. Each shelf is 12.6 by 7.1 inches, the unit is 15.4 inches tall, and the lower shelf adjusts by 4 inches. Its C-clamps fit desktops up to 1.8 inches thick, with no drilling.
Below the desk, it suits a router, a powered USB hub, a hard drive, notebooks or a small speaker. VIVO rates it for 11 pounds across both shelves, so weigh a battery backup before you put one on it. Hang it at the side of the desk, not over your knees: at 15.4 inches tall, it reaches well down toward your lap. Because it clamps to the desktop, it rises and lowers with a standing desk. VIVO also makes 24- and 30-inch versions. Amazon showed 4.6 stars from about 835 ratings, shared across the sizes.
Pros
- Clamps on; no drilling
- Mounts above or below the desk
- Moves with a standing desk
- Adjustable lower shelf
Cons
- 11 lb limit for both shelves
- Hangs 15.4" down: keep it at the side
- Desktop must be 1.8" thick or less
Key specs
- Size
- Two 12.6" x 7.1" shelves; 15.4" tall overall
- Storage
- 2 shelves; the lower one adjusts by 4"

Check price at Amazon (opens in a new tab)VIVO Under Desk and Wall PC Mount (MOUNT-PC01)
Who it's for: Desktop PC owners whose tower sits on the floor or takes up desk space, including standing desk owners.
A PC tower on the floor takes up foot space, and on a standing desk its cables have to stretch every time the desk rises. VIVO's MOUNT-PC01 holds the tower under the desktop instead. VIVO lists it for cases 3.5 to 7.8 inches wide and 11.5 to 20.5 inches tall, up to 22 pounds; VIVO says that fits most PC cases on the market. It's steel, with padding inside, and it swivels 135 degrees so you can reach the ports on the back. It can also mount on a wall.
It screws into a desktop at least 1 inch thick. VIVO's listing adds an important check: the desk's overhang, from the frame or leg to the edge of the desktop, should be at least as wide as your PC. Mount it at one end, outside the knee zone. On a standing desk, the PC then moves with the desk, so only the power cord needs slack. For full-size towers, VIVO sells a larger MOUNT-PC01L, and a white MOUNT-PC01W exists. It had 4.6 stars from about 2,305 ratings, shared with the larger version.
Pros
- Gets the tower off the floor
- Fits cases 3.5"–7.8" wide
- Swivels 135° for port access
- Moves with a standing desk
Cons
- 22 lb limit; mid towers only
- Needs a 1"-thick top and enough overhang
- Screws into the desk
Key specs
- Size
- Fits PC cases 3.5"–7.8" wide and 11.5"–20.5" tall
- Storage
- Holds one PC tower under the desk or on a wall
- Load and mounting
- 22 lbs; desk at least 1" thick, with an overhang at least as wide as the PC
- Type
- Steel bracket that screws in; swivels 135° for access to the ports
- Also
- A larger MOUNT-PC01L fits full towers; 4.6 stars, about 2,305 Amazon ratings shared with the larger version (Oct. 19, 2026)

Check price at Amazon (opens in a new tab)Kanto HH Under Desk Headphone Hook
Who it's for: Anyone whose headphones live on the desk, on the monitor or on the floor.
A headphone stand on a small desk takes space you'd rather use for something else. Kanto's HH hook goes under the desk edge instead. It's solid steel, 4.2 inches long, 1.6 inches wide and 1.4 inches tall, with a contoured silicone cradle that supports the headband. Kanto rates it for 2 pounds, enough for most on-ear and over-ear headphones.
It mounts with the supplied 3M VHB adhesive pad, or with two included screws if you want it permanent. Put it near a side edge so the headphones hang outside your knee space. It's black or white (HHW), and Kanto lists a 2-year warranty. It has the fewest ratings of our picks: 4.2 stars from about 108 on Amazon when we checked.
Pros
- Takes no desk space
- Steel with a silicone cradle
- Adhesive or screw mounting
- Black or white
Cons
- Holds one pair
- Fewest ratings here (about 108)
- 2 lb limit
Key specs

Check price at Amazon (opens in a new tab)Under-desk storage by desk type
- Small fixed desk against a wall (30 to 40 inches wide): the IRIS cart beside your knees, stick-on drawers under the front corners, and a cable tray at the back. If the desk is under 32 inches wide, put the cart beside the desk instead of under it.
- Small standing desk: keep the floor clear and attach everything to the desktop: the Mount-It drawer or stick-on drawers, the VIVO shelf at one side, the PC mount at the other and a headphone hook. Raise the desk to full height to check every cable before you tidy them.
- Closet office: a closet desk is usually shallow and boxed in, so low, rolling storage works best. The Safco stand slides under the desk with a printer on it. Our closet office guide covers desk depth and layouts.
- Corner desk: the deep corner behind your knees is hard to reach, so use it for things you rarely need, such as a printer on the Safco stand or a box of archived files. Our corner desks guide compares shapes and sizes.
- Wall-mounted or fold-down desk: there's usually no frame to clamp to and no room for a cart while the desk is folded. Store things on the wall around it instead; our wall-mounted desks guide includes fold-down desks with built-in shelves and cubbies.
Mistakes to avoid
- Filling the knee space. Storage in the middle pushes you away from the desk or sideways in your chair. Keep about 20 inches clear.
- Measuring the desktop, not the frame. The desktop height is not the clear height. Measure to the lowest point underneath.
- Ignoring the weight limit. Clamp-on shelves and stick-on organizers have small limits. Heavy things belong on the floor, on a cart or stand.
- Blocking a standing desk's frame. Anything on the floor must clear the crossbar and feet at the lowest setting, and nothing should stop the legs from moving.
For the clutter on top of the desk, see our small desk organizers and hutches: compact drawer units, a file organizer and shelves that sit on or clamp to the desk.
FAQ
What can I use for storage under my desk?
A narrow rolling drawer cart, a low rolling stand for a printer or bins, a slide-out or stick-on drawer under the desktop, a clamp-on shelf hung from the desk edge, a PC mount and a headphone hook. For paperwork, a small filing cabinet is the better fit; see our small filing cabinets guide.
How much space do I need under a desk for my legs?
Ergonomic guidelines generally call for roughly 20 inches of clear width for your legs, and more is more comfortable. Measure the clear width between the desk legs, keep that knee zone empty, and use the space on either side for storage.
Will a rolling cart fit under my desk?
Measure from the floor to the lowest point under the desktop, including any frame, apron or keyboard tray, and subtract about half an inch. The IRIS cart here is 26.4 inches tall, so it needs about 27 inches of clear height; the Safco stand is only 13.5 inches tall.
How do I add a drawer under a desk without drilling?
Use stick-on drawers like the Bostitch Konnect, which attach to a flat underside with adhesive. They are small (5.61 x 9.06 inches each), so keep them for light items. Larger drawers such as the Mount-It MI-7148 screw into the desk.
What under-desk storage works with a standing desk?
Anything that attaches to the desktop, such as an under-desk drawer, a clamp-on shelf, a PC mount or a headphone hook, moves with the desk. Floor storage has to clear the frame at the lowest setting, and every cable needs enough slack for the highest one.

About this guide
We looked for under-desk storage that fits compact desks and standing desks, with one product for each kind of storage space: a rolling cart, a low rolling stand, a screw-on drawer, stick-on drawers, a clamp-on shelf, a PC mount and a headphone hook. Each pick has a real product video from its maker or, for Safco, a Safco video posted by an office-supply dealer, shown in its section. Specs come from IRIS USA's, Safco's, Mount-It's, VIVO's and Kanto's product pages and from the Amazon listings for all seven, retrieved on Oct. 19, 2026. Where the maker and Amazon disagree, as with the IRIS cart's dimensions, we show both. Ratings come from Amazon listings on the same date. We left out filing cabinets, which have their own guide. We did not test these products hands-on and don't publish star ratings of our own.
