Hands typing on a keyboard on a slim pull-out tray under a wooden desk, with a laptop and a small plant on the desktop above.

On a small desk, the keyboard is often what crowds everything else out. A 20- or 24-inch-deep desk doesn't leave much room between a keyboard at the front edge and a monitor at the back. An under-desk keyboard tray moves the keyboard and mouse onto a second level that slides out when you work and back under the desk when you don't. That frees the desktop for a laptop, a notebook or a monitor at a comfortable distance. If you work on a laptop, pairing a tray with a laptop stand puts the screen up and the keyboard down. With an external monitor, a monitor riser does the same for the screen.

Trays differ more than they look, though. Some clamp on with no drilling and some screw into the underside of the desk. They also need different desk thicknesses and amounts of clear space underneath. We compared six trays from VIVO and UPLIFT on those numbers. We didn't test them hands-on. Every figure comes from the maker's product page or spec sheet, linked below each pick.

TL;DR: Our top picks

  1. Best overall: VIVO Clamp-on Keyboard Tray, 27" ($49.99). Clamps on with no drilling, holds 11 lbs and slides out 8.5", for $49.99.
  2. Best for narrow desks: VIVO Clamp-on Compact 20" Keyboard Tray ($45.99). A 20" tray that needs 26" between its clamps.
  3. Best for thick desktops: VIVO Clamp-on Height Adjustable Keyboard Tray ($69.99). Clamps desks up to 3.4" thick and sits 0.25"–7" below the surface.
  4. Best adjustable tray: UPLIFT Big Standard Keyboard Tray System ($114). Height and tilt adjustment on an 11" or 21" track, for $114.
  5. Best compact adjustable tray: UPLIFT Switch Ultra-Thin Keyboard Tray System ($184). A 19.75" tray with a separate mouse platform for either side.

Figure 1. How far under the desk each tray's track or mount reaches, measured back from the front edge. Anything under the desk in that zone (a drawer, a crossbar, a modesty panel) has to be clear. UPLIFT includes an 11 in and a 21 in track; the shorter one is drawn. The VIVO KB03B figure is the length of its sliding track. Dashed lines mark the back edge of a 20-, 24- and 30-inch-deep desk.

How to choose a keyboard tray for a small desk

1. Clamp-on or screw-in?

Clamp-on trays (the three VIVO MOUNT-KB05 models here) attach with two C-clamps that grip the desktop, so there's nothing to drill. That makes them a good fit for renters and for desks you might replace. Screw-in trays (VIVO MOUNT-KB03B and both UPLIFT systems) mount a track to the underside of the desk. They can swivel, tilt and adjust height, but they need a solid desktop to screw into. VIVO asks for at least 5/8 inch on the KB03B.

2. Check your desktop's thickness and width

Clamp-on trays only fit a range of desk thicknesses: 0.5 to 1.25 inches for the VIVO KB05E and KB05ES, and up to 3.4 inches for the black and walnut KB05HB. The clamps sit at each end of the tray, so the desk has to be wide enough for them. VIVO lists 32.5 inches including clamps for the 27-inch KB05E, 33 inches for the KB05HB, and 26 inches between the clamps for the compact KB05ES. On a desk narrower than about 32 inches, the KB05ES is the only clamp-on tray here that fits. Check for a drawer, too: many small desks have one right where the tray would go. See our desks for small spaces guide for desk sizes.

3. Make sure the space under the desk is clear

Every tray needs a clear zone under the desktop for its track or mount: a 12.3-inch track for the VIVO clamp-on trays (VIVO says it needs that much clearance under the desk), a 14.25-inch sliding track for the KB03B, and an 11- or 21-inch track for UPLIFT's systems (Figure 1). Drawers, a crossbar or a modesty panel in that zone will block it. Standing desks are the usual problem. VIVO says the KB03B needs a spacer bracket to clear a height-adjustable desk's crossbar, and UPLIFT sells a Track Spacer for the same reason.

4. Check knee clearance

A tray sits below the desktop, so it takes some of the space your legs need. The fixed VIVO clamp-on trays sit 1.5 to 2.75 inches below the desk surface. The KB05HB adjusts from 0.25 to 7 inches below, and UPLIFT's Economy Mechanism ranges from 1.75 inches above to 4.25 inches below the underside of the desk. Measure from the floor to the underside of your desk and from the floor to the top of your thighs while seated, and make sure the tray fits between them.

5. Weight and width

Keyboards and mice are light, but leaning on a tray isn't. VIVO rates its clamp-on trays at 11 lbs and the KB03B at only 4.4 lbs. UPLIFT doesn't publish a weight rating for its trays. For width, a 25- to 27-inch tray has room for a keyboard and mouse side by side. On the 20-inch KB05ES and the 19.75-inch UPLIFT Switch, check that your keyboard and mouse both fit. The Switch adds a 9-inch mouse platform at the side to help.

The picks, in detail

Best overall

VIVO Clamp-on Keyboard Tray, 27"

VIVO Clamp-on Keyboard Tray, 27"Product photo coming soon

Who it's for: Most people adding a tray to a fixed desk at least 32.5 inches wide, especially renters who don’t want to drill.

VIVO's MOUNT-KB05E is a sliding tray on a steel track that clamps onto the desktop. The 27-inch version has a 26.8" x 11" tray and measures 32.5 inches across including the clamps. It fits desktops 0.5 to 1.25 inches thick, sits 1.5 to 2.75 inches below the desk surface and slides out 8.5 inches. VIVO rates it for 11 lbs. It was $49.99 in black, with other finishes at $59.99 to $69.99.

Its limits come from its simple design. There's no tilt or swivel, and the height below the desk is fixed by the clamp. The 12.3-inch track has to clear anything under the front of the desk. For a wider desk, VIVO sells a 34-inch version (39.4 inches including clamps) from $69.99.

Pros

  • No drilling
  • 11 lb rating
  • Slides out 8.5"
  • $49.99

Cons

  • Needs a desk at least 32.5" wide
  • Desks 0.5"–1.25" thick only
  • No tilt or swivel

Best for narrow desks

VIVO Clamp-on Compact 20" Keyboard Tray

VIVO Clamp-on Compact 20" Keyboard TrayProduct photo coming soon

Who it's for: People with a narrow desk, like a 28- to 30-inch writing desk, who want a clamp-on tray.

The KB05ES is the same design as the KB05E with a narrower 20" x 11" tray. VIVO lists 26 inches between the clamps, so it fits desks that are too narrow for the standard model. It has the same 0.5–1.25-inch thickness range, 11 lb rating, 8.5-inch extension and 12.3-inch track, and it sits 1.5 to 2.75 inches below the desk. It was $45.99 in black and $54.99 in other finishes.

The trade-off is space on the tray. A 20-inch tray may not fit a full-size keyboard and a mouse side by side, so measure yours first. A compact keyboard helps.

Pros

  • Fits desks about 26" wide
  • No drilling
  • Lowest price here ($45.99)

Cons

  • 20" tray: tight for keyboard and mouse
  • Desks 0.5"–1.25" thick only
  • No tilt or swivel

Best for thick desktops

VIVO Clamp-on Height Adjustable Keyboard Tray

VIVO Clamp-on Height Adjustable Keyboard TrayProduct photo coming soon

Who it's for: People whose desk is too thick for a standard clamp, or who want to set the tray lower without drilling.

The KB05HB adds adjustable side brackets to VIVO's clamp-on design. The tray is 26.8" x 11" (33 inches including clamps). VIVO lists five bracket heights, with 2.4 inches of adjustment, and says the tray sits 0.25 to 7 inches below the desk surface depending on desk thickness and setting. The black and walnut versions clamp desktops 0.5 to 3.4 inches thick; the light wood and white versions fit 0.5 to 1.75 inches. It's rated for 11 lbs and was $69.99 in all four finishes.

It costs $20 more than the KB05E. For that you get a much wider thickness range and a lower possible tray height, which can help if your desk is on the tall side. Like the other clamp-on trays, it doesn't tilt or swivel.

Pros

  • Desks up to 3.4" thick (black, walnut)
  • 0.25"–7" below the desk
  • No drilling
  • 11 lb rating

Cons

  • Needs a desk at least 33" wide
  • Light wood and white versions fit only 1.75" desks
  • No tilt or swivel

VIVO Under Desk Keyboard Tray (Tilt and Swivel)

VIVO Under Desk Keyboard Tray (Tilt and Swivel)Product photo coming soon

Who it's for: People with a solid desktop who want a tray that tilts and rotates, and who only put a keyboard and mouse on it.

The KB03B screws to the underside of the desk on a 14.25" x 6" sliding track. Its 25" x 10" tray adjusts 5 inches in height, tilts from +6° to -22° and rotates 360°, according to VIVO. It needs a desktop at least 5/8 inch thick. It was $69.99 in black, with a 34-inch version (MOUNT-KB36B) for $89.99.

The rating is the catch: VIVO lists it at 4.4 lbs, well below its clamp-on trays. That's enough for a keyboard and mouse but not for leaning on. On a standing desk, VIVO says you'll need its spacer bracket (sold separately) to clear the frame's crossbar.

Pros

  • Tilt, swivel and 5" height adjustment
  • Works on desks of any width
  • $69.99

Cons

  • 4.4 lb rating
  • Screws into the desk
  • Needs a spacer on many standing desks

UPLIFT Big Standard Keyboard Tray System

UPLIFT Big Standard Keyboard Tray SystemProduct photo coming soon

Who it's for: People who want to fine-tune keyboard height and tilt, and who can screw a track into a solid desktop.

UPLIFT's Big Standard system is a 27" x 11" tray on an articulating mechanism that slides along an under-desk track. UPLIFT includes both an 11-inch and a 21-inch track, and the short one is meant for desks with limited space underneath. With the Economy Mechanism, its spec sheet lists a range from 1.75 inches above to 4.25 inches below the underside of the desk, tilt from -15° to +15° and a 360° swivel. UPLIFT says it works on non-UPLIFT desks and meets ANSI/BIFMA X5.5-2014.

It was $114 with the Economy Mechanism. The Quick-Adjust Mechanism, which has a lift-and-release lever and a tilt-angle dial, adds $50. A Track Spacer, which UPLIFT suggests for 24-inch-deep desks so the track can mount over frame parts, adds $49. UPLIFT doesn't publish a weight rating. It has UPLIFT's 15-year warranty.

Pros

  • Height, tilt and swivel adjustment
  • Includes an 11" track for small desks
  • Works on desks of any width
  • 15-year warranty

Cons

UPLIFT Switch Ultra-Thin Keyboard Tray System

UPLIFT Switch Ultra-Thin Keyboard Tray SystemProduct photo coming soon

Who it's for: People who want an adjustable tray but don’t have room for a 27-inch platform under their desk.

The Switch uses the same mechanisms as the Big Standard, with a smaller 19.75" x 12.5" phenolic tray and a separate 9-inch mouse platform that moves side to side. According to UPLIFT's spec sheet, the system is 21 inches wide with the mouse platform stowed and 29.25 inches with it extended. The platform can go on either side for left- or right-handed users. With the Economy Mechanism it has the same 6 inches of height range, ±15° tilt and 360° swivel.

It was $184 with the Economy Mechanism ($50 more for Quick-Adjust), the highest price here. If you'll mount it on an L-shaped desk, UPLIFT sells a Corner Sleeve ($59) so the tray can sit in the corner. See our corner desks guide. UPLIFT doesn't publish a weight rating.

FAQ

Do keyboard trays work on small desks?

Yes, if the desk is wide enough for the clamps or solid enough to screw into, and the space underneath is clear. The VIVO MOUNT-KB05ES needs 26" between its clamps; screw-in trays like the UPLIFT systems work on any width.

Can I add a keyboard tray without drilling?

Yes. The VIVO MOUNT-KB05E, KB05ES and KB05HB clamp onto the desktop. Check your desk’s thickness: 0.5"–1.25" for the KB05E and KB05ES, and up to 3.4" for the black and walnut KB05HB.

Will a keyboard tray work on a standing desk?

Often, but check the frame. Many standing desks have a crossbar under the front of the top. VIVO says the KB03B needs a spacer bracket on height-adjustable desks, and UPLIFT sells a Track Spacer. For desk options, see our small standing desks guide.

How much weight can a keyboard tray hold?

VIVO rates its clamp-on trays at 11 lbs and the KB03B at 4.4 lbs. UPLIFT doesn’t publish a rating for its tray systems.

Did you test these trays?

No. This guide compares manufacturer specifications and published prices. See How We Research.

About this guide
