A light-wood L-shaped desk fitted into the corner of a small bedroom under a window, with a closed laptop on one side, an open notebook and a mug on the other, and a potted plant in the corner.

In a lot of small rooms, the corner is the one spot nothing else wants. The bed goes against one wall, the door swings along another, and the corner stays empty. A corner desk puts that space to work. An L-shaped desk goes further, giving you two work surfaces for the floor area of one long desk plus a bit.

The trade-off is that corner desks are measured differently from ordinary desks, and the numbers that matter are easy to miss. You need the length along each wall, the depth of each side, and where the legs or frame land. We compared five corner and L-shaped desks, two fixed-height and three sit-stand, using those numbers. We didn't test these desks hands-on. Every figure below comes from the maker's own product page, linked under each pick.

TL;DR: Our top picks

  1. Smallest corner footprint: IKEA MICKE Corner Workstation ($299.99). A 39 3/8" square corner workstation with built-in shelves and a 110 lb desk rating.
  2. Best budget L-shaped desk: IKEA LAGKAPTEN / LINNMON L-Shaped Desk ($107.98). Two IKEA tops on eight legs, 47 1/4" x 63" overall, for $107.98.
  3. Best small sit-stand corner desk: VIVO E1L Corner Electric Desk, 47" x 47" ($199.99). 47.2" along each wall but only 18.7" deep, with a 28.5"–46.5" electric height range, for $199.99.
  4. Best sit-stand L for a monitor setup: VIVO E3 Series Corner Electric Desk, 63" x 47" ($249.99). A 23.6"-deep L top rated for 225 lbs, at $249.99 in black.
  5. Best premium (if you have 5 feet each way): UPLIFT L-Shaped Standing Desk, 60" x 60" ($1149). A 22.6"–48.7" height range and a 535 lb lifting capacity on a 60" x 60" top.

Your own best height depends on your body and chair.

How to choose a corner desk for a small room

1. Measure both walls from the corner

A corner desk needs two clear runs of wall, not one. Measure from the corner along each wall to the first thing in the way: a door frame, a window sill, a radiator or an outlet you need to reach. Then compare those two numbers with the desk's two sides. In this guide they range from 39 3/8 inches each way (MICKE corner workstation) to 60 inches each way (UPLIFT).

Check which way the return goes, too. IKEA says the MICKE corner workstation's legs can be mounted on the left or right, and VIVO and UPLIFT both let you put the return on either side of the E3 and the L-Shaped desk.

2. Depth matters on both sides

An L-shaped desk has two depths, and they're not always the same. The IKEA LAGKAPTEN/LINNMON combination is 23 5/8 inches deep on its main side and 17 3/4 inches on the return. UPLIFT's L is 30 inches deep on the main side and 27.5 inches on the return. A shallow return (like the VIVO E1L's 18.7 inches) leaves more floor in front of the desk, which matters if your chair has to roll back into a walkway.

If you'll put a monitor on the shallow side, plan on a monitor arm to push the screen back, or put the monitor in the deeper part of the L.

3. Fixed height or sit-stand?

Fixed corner desks are cheaper and need no outlet. The two IKEA desks here cost $107.98 and $299.99. Sit-stand corner desks start at $199.99 here (VIVO E1L) and go to $1,149 (UPLIFT). The VIVO desks use a single motor; UPLIFT says its frame has a motor in each leg. Heights are compared in Figure 2 above. If you're tall, note that both VIVO desks top out below 47 inches, while UPLIFT lists 48.7 inches.

4. Look at where the legs land

A corner desk's legs or feet decide what fits underneath: a drawer unit, a PC tower, a bin, your knees. The LAGKAPTEN/LINNMON combination uses eight separate ADILS legs, and IKEA lists 27 1/2 inches of free height under the desk. VIVO lists the E1L's base at 38.2" x 22.8" and the E3's feet at 22.8 inches deep. UPLIFT's L uses a three-leg frame.

5. Think about where you'll face

Most corner desks put your back to the room. That's fine for focus, but it can mean glare from a window behind you, and on video calls the room behind you is what people see. If you work mostly on a laptop, sit on the side of the L that faces where you'd rather look.

The picks, in detail

Smallest corner footprint

IKEA MICKE Corner Workstation

IKEA MICKE Corner WorkstationProduct photo coming soon

Who it's for: People with a small, empty corner who want a desk and shelving in one piece and mostly work on a laptop.

The MICKE corner workstation is the most compact desk here at 39 3/8 inches along each wall, so it fits corners the L-shaped desks can't. It's also 55 7/8 inches tall, because IKEA builds shelves, a drawer, a cable outlet and a magnetic board into it. IKEA rates the desk surface at 110 lbs, but the shelves at only 7 lbs each and the drawer at 2 lbs. Those are for supplies, not heavy books.

At $299.99 it costs nearly three times as much as the LAGKAPTEN/LINNMON L-desk below, which gives you more surface but no storage. Check the 55 7/8-inch height against window sills and sloped ceilings before you buy. For more small IKEA desks, see our desks for small spaces guide.

Pros

  • Smallest footprint here (39 3/8" square)
  • Shelves, drawer and cable outlet built in
  • Legs mount on the left or right

Cons

  • Shelves rated at only 7 lbs each
  • 55 7/8" tall: check window sills
  • Fixed height

Best budget L-shaped desk

IKEA LAGKAPTEN / LINNMON L-Shaped Desk

IKEA LAGKAPTEN / LINNMON L-Shaped DeskProduct photo coming soon

Who it's for: Anyone who wants the most desk surface for the money and has about 4 by 5 feet of corner to give it.

IKEA sells this L-shaped desk as a combination: a 47 1/4" x 23 5/8" LAGKAPTEN top and a 39 3/8" x 17 3/4" LINNMON top on eight ADILS legs. Put together, IKEA lists it at 47 1/4 by 63 inches overall and 28 3/4 inches high, with 27 1/2 inches of free height underneath and a 110 lb maximum load. It was $107.98 on IKEA's site, the lowest price in this guide by about $90.

That price gets you two plain surfaces and nothing else: no storage, no cable management and no height adjustment. The 17 3/4-inch return is shallow, which is good for floor space and fine for a laptop, printer or notebook. The tops are fiberboard with a honeycomb paper filling, per IKEA, so they're light, but that's worth knowing before you clamp a monitor arm to them.

Pros

  • Lowest price here ($107.98)
  • Most surface per dollar
  • Shallow 17 3/4" return saves floor space
  • 27 1/2" free height under the desk

Cons

  • No storage or cable management
  • Fixed height (28 3/4")
  • Honeycomb-filled tops

Best small sit-stand corner desk

VIVO E1L Corner Electric Desk, 47" x 47"

VIVO E1L Corner Electric Desk, 47" x 47"Product photo coming soon

Who it's for: People who want to stand some of the day but only have a small corner, and who work on a laptop or one monitor.

VIVO's E1L is the smallest sit-stand corner desk in this guide. The 47" version is 47.2 inches along each wall, and each side is only 18.7 inches deep (VIVO lists 21.2 inches of depth at the corner). It has an electric single-motor frame with three memory presets, a 28.5"–46.5" height range and a 154 lb weight rating. It was $199.99 on VIVO's site in black.

The numbers to weigh are the shallow top and the 0.5-inch thickness VIVO lists for it. A thin, 18.7-inch-deep surface is fine for a laptop, but it's a squeeze for a keyboard in front of a monitor unless you use a monitor arm. The 46.5-inch maximum height is also lower than the UPLIFT's. If you need more room, VIVO sells a 55" x 55" version (DESK-E1L110B) with 23.6-inch-deep sides and a 28.7"–48" range, which was $279.99.

Pros

  • Sit-stand corner desk for $199.99
  • Only 18.7" deep on each side
  • Three memory presets

Cons

  • 0.5"-thick top
  • 46.5" maximum height
  • Single motor
  • Needs a power outlet

Best sit-stand L for a monitor setup

VIVO E3 Series Corner Electric Desk, 63" x 47"

VIVO E3 Series Corner Electric Desk, 63" x 47"Product photo coming soon

Who it's for: People with a longer wall who want a full-depth sit-stand L for a monitor, keyboard and paperwork.

The E3 is a true L-shaped standing desk: 63 inches along the main wall, 47.3 inches along the return, and 23.6 inches deep throughout, according to VIVO. That depth is the same as many standard desks, so a monitor and keyboard fit without crowding. The top comes in three sections. VIVO lists a 225 lb weight capacity, a 28.5"–46.8" height range, memory presets and a return that can go on either side.

At $249.99 in black (other finishes $259.99–$299.99 in this size), it costs only $50 more than the much smaller E1L. The catch is size. It needs more than 5 feet of one wall, and the 22.8-inch feet take up floor under the desk. Like the E1L, it has a single motor and tops out below 47 inches.

Pros

  • Full 23.6" depth on both sides
  • 225 lb weight capacity
  • Return on the left or right
  • Only $50 more than the E1L

Cons

  • Needs 63" of wall
  • 46.8" maximum height
  • Single motor
  • Three-piece top

UPLIFT L-Shaped Standing Desk, 60" x 60"

UPLIFT L-Shaped Standing Desk, 60" x 60"Product photo coming soon

Who it's for: People who will use a corner desk all day, want the widest height range, and can spare 60 inches along both walls.

UPLIFT's L-Shaped Standing Desk is the biggest desk in this guide, and it isn't small. The smallest standard size is 60 inches on the main side and 60 inches on the return. The main side is 30 inches deep and the return 27.5 inches. We include it because it has the widest height range here, 22.6 to 48.7 inches, which UPLIFT says fits 5th to 95th percentile users under the BIFMA G1-2013 guideline. That makes it the only desk here that reaches a standing height above 47 inches.

UPLIFT says the V3 frame lifts up to 535 lb, with a motor in each of its three legs, and that it meets ANSI/BIFMA X5.5-2021. The base price was $1,149 for a 60" x 60" laminate top. Other desktops, sizes and add-ons cost more, and UPLIFT was advertising a coupon code at the time. If you'll mount a keyboard tray on an L-shaped desk, UPLIFT also sells a corner sleeve for its trays (see our keyboard tray guide).

Pros

  • Widest height range here (22.6"–48.7")
  • 535 lb lifting capacity
  • Return on the left or right
  • Several desktop materials and sizes

Cons

  • Largest desk here (60" x 60")
  • Highest price here ($1,149 base)
  • 30" depth uses the most floor

FAQ

What is the smallest corner desk that still works?

For a laptop, a corner workstation like the IKEA MICKE (39 3/8" on each side) is about as small as corner desks get. For an L-shaped desk with two work areas, the VIVO E1L is 47.2" on each side but only 18.7" deep.

Is an L-shaped desk too big for a small bedroom?

Not always. Measure along both walls from the corner. The IKEA LAGKAPTEN/LINNMON combination is 47 1/4" x 63" with a 17 3/4"-deep return, which uses less floor than its overall size suggests. See Figure 1 for each desk drawn to scale in a 10 x 10 ft room.

Can I get a standing desk for a corner?

Yes. In this guide, the VIVO E1L ($199.99), VIVO E3 ($249.99) and UPLIFT L-Shaped ($1,149 base) are all electric sit-stand desks. Their maximum heights are 46.5", 46.8" and 48.7". For straight compact standing desks, see our small standing desks guide.

Should the return go on the left or right?

Put it where it won’t block a door or walkway. If both work, UPLIFT recommends the return be on the same side as your dominant hand.

Did you test these desks?

No. This guide compares manufacturer specifications and published prices. See How We Research.

About this guide

We looked for corner workstations and L-shaped desks sold to US buyers whose overall size suits a small room, plus one larger premium option for comparison. All dimensions, heights, load ratings and prices come from the manufacturers' own product pages, retrieved on Oct. 10, 2026 (the MICKE corner workstation on Oct. 9, 2026). Each product links to its source. We didn't test these desks hands-on and don't publish star ratings.
