The Best Laptop Stands for Small Desks (2026)

On a small desk, a laptop sitting flat takes up the middle of the desktop and puts the screen well below eye level. A laptop stand fixes both: it raises the screen and moves the laptop toward the back of the desk, leaving the front free for a separate keyboard and mouse. On a 20- or 24-inch-deep desk, how much depth the stand itself takes up matters as much as how high it goes.
We compared eight stands on those numbers: fixed and adjustable desktop stands, a folding riser with a built-in dock, a tabletop sit-stand stand, and two holders that put the laptop on a monitor arm so it takes no desk space at all. We didn't test them hands-on. Every figure comes from the maker's product page or spec sheet, linked below each pick. If you use an external monitor instead, see our monitor stands and desk shelves guide.
TL;DR: Our top picks
- Best overall: Rain Design mStand Laptop Stand (Check current price). A one-piece aluminum stand with a 10" x 7.5" base, the shallowest desktop stand here.

- Best adjustable and folding: Twelve South Curve Flex (Check current price). Adjusts from flat to 10.78" tall and folds to 1.18" thick.
- Best with a built-in dock: VIVO Aluminum Laptop Riser Docking Station ($99.99). Adjusts 1.5"–7.2", holds 44 lbs and adds HDMI, DisplayPort and Ethernet.
- Best for zero desk space: UPLIFT Laptop Mount ($49). Puts the laptop on a monitor arm; holds 19.8 lbs and laptops 11.3"–18.3" wide.

Size and fit, drawn to scale
How to choose a laptop stand for a small desk
1. Plan for a separate keyboard and mouse
Once the screen is raised, the laptop's own keyboard is too high to type on comfortably for long. Most people pair a stand with a separate keyboard and mouse. On a small desk, that keyboard needs room at the front edge, so check that the stand's depth plus your keyboard fits the desk. An under-desk keyboard tray moves the keyboard off the desktop entirely.
2. Check how much desk depth the stand takes up
The desktop stands here take from 7.5 inches of depth (Rain Design mStand) to about 10 inches (VIVO STAND-V001N plate and IKEA LÅNESPELARE), with IKEA's DUBBLA at 15 3/4 inches because it's a small table rather than a stand (Figure 2). Add the depth of your keyboard and a little room for your wrists. On a 20-inch desk, a shallow stand leaves the most room in front of it.
3. Fixed or adjustable height?
A fixed stand is simpler and usually sturdier. The mStand is 5.9 inches tall and the LÅNESPELARE 3 7/8 inches. Adjustable stands let you match the screen to your eye level: the Twelve South Curve Flex goes from flat to 10.78 inches, and VIVO's docking riser from 1.5 to 7.2 inches (Figure 1). The right height depends on your own height, your chair and your desk, so a range helps if you're not sure.
4. Does it need to fold?
If the stand has to come off the desk when you need the space, or travel with you, choose one that folds. The Curve Flex folds to 1.18 inches thick and comes with a travel sleeve. The LÅNESPELARE and VIVO's docking riser fold too. The one-piece mStand doesn't, and VIVO doesn't describe the STAND-V001N as folding.
5. Already have a monitor arm? Use a VESA holder
A VESA laptop holder screws to a monitor arm in place of a monitor, so the laptop floats above the desk and takes no desk depth beyond the arm's clamp. UPLIFT's Laptop Mount needs a 75 mm VESA plate, and VIVO's STAND-LAP4 fits 75 or 100 mm. Check that your arm can carry the laptop: UPLIFT rates the mount at 19.8 lbs and VIVO the LAP4 at 8.8 lbs, but the arm's own rating also applies. See our monitor arms guide.
The picks, in detail
Rain Design mStand Laptop Stand
Who it's for: People who leave the laptop on the desk every day and want a sturdy fixed stand that takes as little depth as possible.
Rain Design's mStand is a single piece of aluminum with a 10" x 7.5" base, the shallowest of the desktop stands in this guide. It's 5.9 inches tall and weighs 3 lbs. Rain Design says it fits all MacBooks, including the 16-inch MacBook Pro, and most other laptops. A 2-inch hole at the back routes cables, and the space under the raised top can hold a keyboard when you're not using it. It comes in six colors.
The height is fixed, so it suits people for whom 5.9 inches is about right. It doesn't fold, and Rain Design doesn't publish a weight rating.

Who it's for: People who want to set the screen height exactly, or who move the stand between desks or take it with them.
Twelve South's Curve Flex folds from flat to 10.78 inches tall and adjusts the keyboard angle from 0 to 45 degrees. Twelve South says it lifts a MacBook screen and camera up to 22 inches. It's 10.4 inches wide and 8.8 inches deep, weighs 1.75 lbs and folds to 1.18 inches thick into the included neoprene sleeve. It fits laptops at least 8.66 inches wide and up to 7 lbs.

Who it's for: People who plug a USB-C laptop into a monitor, network and accessories every day and want one cable on a small desk.
VIVO's STAND-V000LD is a folding aluminum riser with a removable USB-C docking station. The dock has HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, Gigabit Ethernet, USB-A and USB-C ports, a headphone jack and a 100W power delivery input. The 11" x 8.5" platform sits on an 8.5" x 7.6" base, adjusts from 1.5 to 7.2 inches and tilts from 0 to 60 degrees. VIVO rates it at 44 lbs, the highest here. It was $99.99 on sale, with a regular price of $139.99.
The dock only helps if your laptop connects over USB-C. If you don't need the ports, a plain stand costs much less.

UPLIFT recommends a separate single arm for it, or a multi-monitor arm whose arms adjust in height on their own. It was $49 for the mount alone and has UPLIFT's 15-year warranty.

What is the best laptop stand for a small desk?
One that takes little depth and lifts the screen enough. The Rain Design mStand is 7.5" deep and 5.9" tall. If you have a monitor arm, a VESA holder like the UPLIFT Laptop Mount takes no desk depth at all.
Do I need a separate keyboard with a laptop stand?
For long sessions, usually yes. Once the screen is raised, the laptop’s own keyboard sits too high to type on comfortably. See our keyboard trays guide for ways to fit one on a small desk.
How high should a laptop stand be?
High enough that the top of the screen is near your eye level, which depends on your height, chair and desk. Adjustable stands like the Twelve South Curve Flex (flat to 10.78") and VIVO STAND-V000LD (1.5"–7.2") let you set it.
Can I put a laptop on a monitor arm?
Yes, with a VESA laptop holder. UPLIFT’s Laptop Mount fits 75 mm VESA plates and holds 19.8 lbs; VIVO’s STAND-LAP4 fits 75 and 100 mm plates and holds 8.8 lbs. The arm must be rated for the laptop’s weight too.
Did you test these stands?
No. This guide compares manufacturer specifications and published prices. See How We Research.
